I noticed several revolvers are used for concealed carry. In particular, Squirrel noted that for his back up ammo he uses a speed strip.

Qs especially for the persons who carry revolvers, but everyone please join in on this:
  • Do you use speed strips, speed loaders, or neither?
Which do you prefer? And why?
What do you think are the pluses or minuses of each carry method?
Do you use any other way to carry back up/spare ammo for your revolver?
How often (if done) do you use snap caps to practice loading your back up ammo?

PT7, I carry the speed strips just simply because I found speed loaders too bulky to carry. If I am wearing jeans (usually) I can put two speed loaders in the fifth pocket (watch pocket). They are very secure, easily accessible and no bulk.

I have read other people carry the speed loaders with no problem, but that just didn't work for me.

No doubt, speed loaders are probably quicker than speed strips. Although, I can load two round at a time (2-2-1) with the speed strips and it only takes a few seconds. I am no Jerry Miculek with either the strips or loaders.

Don't practice with snap caps, but do practice reloading from the speed strips at the range.

Ive pretty much come full circle. I have tried numerous carry guns, but always find myself going back to the S&W 442 Jframe. I carry a stripper clip in a ammo pouch for a reload,as I also find the speed loaders to be too bulky as well. Im actually looking to acquire another jframe and plan on carrying 2 since they carry so well for me.

I switched to the Airweight and the speed strips are way more convenient for stashing in a pocket.

I was partial to a Kel-Tec .32 acp. It was easy to pocket and the slide stayed open on the last shot.
However, it did not pass a test I gave it. So I went back to a .38 revolver. I had liked a S&W nickel plated model 38 that I gave to a former brother in law. I ordered a 638 and it's with me most of the time.

The holster is a Mika pocket holster. It rides strong side front pocket. I carry Federal Nyclad 158 grn +Ps in it.

she's had a Taurus equivalent of the 638 since the early 70's .... her hand strength (arthritis) makes it impossible for her to pull the double action trigger without way too much muzzle movement .... that fact is really evident when watching her with a laser equipped pistol .... she can still fire single action with minimal barrel movement

My everyday carry is a J frame Smith & Wesson revolver. I carry it in a Blackhawk size three pocket holster, front right pocket.

When I was looking at J frames I knew I wanted .38, not .357, 5 shot, shorter, lighter. The 637-2 was what I wanted. 2 versions, standard & Performance Center. Price difference of $85. Went home and did my research. What you get with the Performace Center Version is $180 worth of S&W gun smithing. Slicked up trigger action, reduced pull, bobbed hammer. Compared them in the store, quite a difference. Well worth the price.

I will carry two speed strips with 5 rds each. They carry easily in your pocket and I can probably reload just as fast with them as a speed loader.

PT7, I carry one speed strip. It is easier to conceal than a speed loader. But that is just the way I carry.

Appreciate your sharing what you use to quick reload revolvers -- speed strips vs. speed loaders. The five folk who answered this question use speed strips, mainly because they are easier to carry & conceal. I've mostly practiced loading my SP101 with an HKS speed loader, but think I'm going to focus some time trying out speed strips. Thanks for the helpful chats!!

In the real world reloading in a gun in a gun fight and bad guys is under 25 yds with a knife your dead . A bad guy at 21 Ft with a knife will stab you before you can draw and fire a gun at him . If you don't believe me have buddy or wife role play a few different scenario .

my wife is scheduled to attend NC's consealed carry class in mid May and for a good while we've been looking for a pistol with which she felt comfortable .... earlier today that search came to an end when she purchased a Smith J-Frame with a ]Crimson Trace Lazer Sight --- http://www.crimsontrace.com/.... its chambered in 38 Special +P, the switch to turn on/off the Lazer is built into a finger groove, and the battery on/off switch is in the bottom of the grip .... she hopes to be able to get it out on a range next week while we are in Missouri

update .... my wife passed her concealed carry class with ease, the subsequent paperwork has been submitted and her permit should be mailed to us shortly after we arrive in South Dakota where we plan to spend the summer .... I'm considering ordering one box of HSM Cowboy Action Ammunition http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/product. ... 25381bb9bd for her to use in her pistol shown above .... I've read of concealed carry instructors recommending against using reloads, her instructor didn't mention it one way or the other .... my theory is the reduced recoil from HSM would be beneficial while at the range she would be using her pistol, it would provide plenty of power .... :?:

Good update, and congrats to your wife on "passing CCW training with ease."

I have some suggestions for choosing CCW ammo and/or home PD ammo. But first, here was my approach on "how to get the best for my need."

My "search" for a good PD ammo started with a lot of web searches on what others preferred or recommended. I also talked to friends and family members who use their handguns for either CCW or PD in the home. The answers, preferences, and options were all over the ammo map!

Then I took a different approach. This was partly from what I learned during the CCW training sessions I had. Whenever I had the chance, I talked to KCMO police officers at stores, restaurants, even in parking lots, etc. I asked them what the KCMO Police Department officers use in their duty guns both for shotgun and handgun ammo. All were quite friendly and willing to share that info. The reason I pursued this is that if I ever had to use my CCW revolver, especially outside the home, when you hit all the legal-beagle stuff that will surely come, if my ammo mirrored what the KC LEOs used, that's a plus. You're not immediately placed into a "Rambo" or "Dirty Harry" image, based on your ammo choice, before a jury or judge.

After I did the above, I then looked at what good manufacturers recommended as their preferred SD ammo. I learned a lot about ammo through those searches/reads. Finally, I started to purchase small boxes of the more expensive HD or PD ammo (usually 20 or 25-round boxes) to try out in my SP101. I needed to see how much recoil there was, how accurate the ammo was at two different distances (7 yards and 15 yards), and if I could handle with both my dominant hand and non-dominant hand (one never knows what might happened in a bad situation). Bottom line, I had to be very, very comfortable with my choice and I put in place all the factors I thought were important for me to be prepared well.

Even though my SP101 is designed to be a .357 magnum revolver, I chose for my HD or PD ammo Cor-Bon .38 special + “P”, 110gr DPX . I found it easy to handle with my stainless revolver, and quite accurate. Also, it is a "safe" choice --- by that, I mean okay legally as I noted in above checking with my local police. BTW, I'd say to get to this "final choice," it took me over a year of testing, shooting various ammo, and so on. I'm most content with my choice.

Final comments on your post. I agree with what you read on "concealed carry instructors recommending against using reloads." In the digging through all the legal stuff, there would be skepticism on what/how those reloads were built. Remember, reloads can be made quite hot by choice.

Second, I've shot quite a number of different cowboy load brands of ammo. I've not ever read of these being best/most effective as a HD or PD round. Maybe I've missed something, but I thought they are designed for a different purpose than that. I read the HSM description you listed, and within uses of that ammo, nothing is there indicating effective for CCW use.

The cool part about everything above is that I'm absolutely correct and spot on ---- for me only! That's how anyone should read my post.

Best as you and your wife search out for the best for her --- and have fun testing ammo while you're doing that!! ;)

I carry a Ruger SR9c. I'm not opposed to carrying a revolver, just tend to prefer the advantages of a semi for carry.

In general, improved ballistics. Compare .38 spcl to 9mm. Most .357 have too much recoil for lots of people to comfortably, and competently fire from a short barreled, small framed revolver.

More capacity. Mine holds 10, a small wheel gun will hold 5.

Slimmer. Most semis are slimmer than most revolvers.

Longer barrels. Most compact semis have longer barrels, and longer sight radius than a compact revolver. This means better accuracy, and more fps.

There are a lot of good reasons why law enforcement and the military switched from revolvers to semis. I know I was ecstatic to trade in my model 15 for a model 92.

Don't misunderstand me, I love revolvers. My favorite non Henry weapon at the range is a model 10 Smith with a 4" barrel. And yes, I have carried it. Winter only where I can have a bulky coat to cover it up with. It's just too bulky for everyday, and I feel a little undergunned.

Having said all this, if you are comfortable with a wheel gun, and not comfortable with a bottomfeeder, then by all means you should probably carry the wheelgun. A well placed SD .38 will do the job, and it is unlikely you will need more than 5. Semis do require more quality time at the range to remain competent with them.
There is, I think, humor here which does not translate well from English to sanity. - Sanya

I always carry a BUG gun even with a 13 shot Glock 23 . I practice double tap . So a 5 shot "J" frame is 2 bad guys and 1 miss .
