I gotta get a recoil pad
Went to the range today with Clovispup. Had a great time with the Henry's. Let the guy next to me shoot the .357 Big Boy. His eyes lit up.
But I digress. I ran about a dozen rounds of 30-06 through the new to me Columbian Mauser. This is the third range trip with it. This is the first set of my reloads through it. I thought the start loads would be softer recoil. Perhaps they are. I still need a recoil pad. The current "pad" on it is solid rubber, well hardened over time. I don't want to spend a lot of money on this weapon, as I won't be shooting it that much. Probably mostly used to hunt with. I found the dozen rounds rather punishing. I wasn't this sore after shooting a couple boxes of 12 gauge. I should have gotten one before refinishing the stock. I could have sanded the new pad down with no worry. Oh well.
If I don't get some relief from the recoil, I won't be shooting much at all.

Cabelas use to sell a slip over pad called Shooters friend. I bought one for the Shiloh 45-100 because when you shoot it in the prone position off sticks it would say hello to you. That slip over cover made all the difference in the world. I believe there made of latex. Al

Re: I gotta get a recoil pad
too well understood .... we are currently in Texas where several years ago I came into contact with a gunsmith that I've come to trust .... last year I had him replace a 40+ year old, hard as a brick OEM recoil and while working on it install a Mercury Recoil Suppressor .... it made a world of difference in our BLR 308; as well as, on a synthetic stock Ruger M77 30-06 .... on Friday I plan to take him 3 more .... one is my Henry 45-70 .... being on blood thinning medication has given me a new appreciation for recoil reduction

I love my Brass Henry's! But the brass butt plate can bite. I think I'm going to buy a wearable recoil pad like this. One pad many rifles.

I have that exact pad in my basement. I have hardly used it as a matter of fact I think only one time because I liked the slipon better. If you want it I will give it to you if you pay the shipping. Just let me know and we will work it out. Al

Re: I gotta get a recoil pad
I picked up a slip on pad by pachmayr today. The fit is a little funky because the thickest part of the stock is near the bottom, and tapers towards the top. This is the opposite of most rifles. I found that the pad works best when it is in the traditional orientation. It also works much better by leaving the old plate on. This will increase the length of pull by an inch. It was only $15, so I will play with it, and can ditch it if it doesn't work out.

Eat a box of Krispy Kreme's every day. You'll hardly feel the recoil by spring.
