Hardwood Floor Install

Post by Sir Henry » Thu Dec 22, 2016 1:22 pm

The red oak arrived today and needs to be kept at 68 degrees. Currently the relative humidity is 29% so it is rather dry.

Reminds me of how badly my hardwood floors need to be refinished. Ah, someday!

What you are seeing is about 1,000 square feet of oak. I also have about 400 square feet that will be refinished. I know it is going to look nice but it also is going to make the house very hard sounding.

I really like hardwoods. You can put nice rugs down to deaden the sound. We have some really nice ones over some really great wood.

Sprinkle a bit of sawdust on the floor and it would be perfect for dancing.

Looks like work. I'd throw a table cloth on it and call it a breakfast nook. :)

We ripped out the awful shag carpeting that covered the hardwood floors in our house when we bought it in 1986. We had the oak boards sanded and refinished before we moved in. It gleamed! It was beautiful! What a wonderful transformation!

Thirty years later, in spite of several rugs and runners, with the daily traffic from two adults and a cat or two, it ought to be refinished once more. But, not by us! We're just happy to keep it vacuumed and dusted.

The new owners are going to love that red oak!

If I attempted that job myself I'd end up wasting 2 days and about $1,000 worth of wood and supplies. I'm not handy in the least. Good luck!

I'm not installing it. I hired a professional that has done the neighbors floor. He really does beautiful work. It will take nine work days over eleven calendar days to complete the job. Cats are going into boarding and I'm going to be living out of the bedroom during the time except for the last three days when I will need to move out completely. I'm going to sleep in my teardrop trailer.

I'm planning on taking my two cats to the cat spa for 11 days while the floors are being installed. For the most part the house will not be livable so cheap old me will be staying in my teardrop and just using the shower and bathroom to the house.

I spent the last two days packing the almost final items into the three bedrooms and garage. I have narrow paths that allows me to get to everything but I'm also prepared not to have to get much. On Monday I will pack the final two boxes and Tuesday I take the two cats to the hotel for 11 days while I camp out.

I told my wife one day maybe we should refinish the hard wood floors in our house. She told me that she likes the worn rustic look. I breathed a big sigh of relief.

I suspect that's what my wife likes about me. Worn and rustic.

First night in the camper. It got down to 14 degrees and that little trailer doesn't have a heater. Also picked up my new Henry pump but being someone living in "the streets" I can't get to the range. I just came in the house to shower (I could sleep inside), made a couple posts and then leave for the day.

Day 2 of me out of the house for the daytime. A quick post here and I'm off to camping in freezing temperatures. I want to get into bed before it drops very much. It is way easier to stay warm than it is to get warm. Twelve above is the forecast.

Morning of day 3. Last night it got down in the teens and the inside of the camper was 29 this morning. I was getting chilly last night and when I got up to pee I grabbed another blanket. After that I sleep fine. A quick shower before the installer gets here this morning and I'm a street person for the day.
