12/14/16 A little chilly at the range

Post by ditto1958 » Fri Dec 16, 2016 10:01 am

No pics of guns or targets today. Went to the range yesterday morning. A nice, crisp and sunny day, about 0 F.

There were about two or three other shooters there, and we had a nice time shooting revolvers at 7 and 25 yards. I bundled up well, but after about an hour one of my big toes started to freeze. Drank a lot of hot coffee, and had a good time. To be honest, we did spend a fair amount of time in the office, talking and solving the world's problems.

Heat wave today. Supposed to soar up to 17 F. :)

Yeah, we're getting that heat wave, today, too, but along with it, 6 to 10" of snow. :)

We don't have an office available at our range to heat up, though we do have a shelter where you can bring your own heater. Haven't done that, yet, though. My shooting fingers take the biggest hit in this kind of cold and since I shoot 99% pistol, that makes for very short range sessions. Last time out, my fingers got so cold it was getting hard to load magazines for the Sig I was shooting. Might be able to avoid that issue next time, by shooting a revolver. We'll see. When things reach that point, though, it is probably time to head home, anyway.

I'm sure an hour was enough, my last trip indoors was not warm with the exhaust fan. But it's worth it for a short time.
Glad somebody is solving the world's problems when I'm not!!

The firing line is well protected from wind, so as long as you dress warm it's fine. As NCG says, your trigger finger gets a bit cold after a bit, so you have to put a glove back on every so often. I needed warmer socks yesterday, but otherwise I was warm.

I've found a disposable latex glove works great in cold weather for a few minutes when you can't wear a mitten over the top. Most important it protects your fingers from getting hurt loading magazines. How many times have you loaded one then looked at your fingers and seen blood? When its that cold you can cut yourself and not even know it.
