Range Report: least dirty firearm

I’ve been shooting the Remington Stardard V for a month or so in about 20 rifles and pistols. It’s so many I don’t bother to clean everyone every time. Especially if I just shoot 50 rounds in one. The thing is I’ve shot 50 rounds in one maybe a dozen times. Some a lot more and some a lot less.

I’ve been reporting how the SV all goes bang but now I’m starting to get sluggish cycling. This is especially true on the magazines as the ammo is now slow to feed. I’ve solved that problem by only shooting tube feed firearms so I’m now down to shooting mostly Henrys. I have maybe two more weeks of warm weather to shoot based from the RV. Then I’ll clean everything and put them away for the summer.

In conclusion I would like to say the Remington Standard V is a good choice for plinking. I’ve yet to have one not go bang. The big downside is they are very dirty. Not necessarily the powder but the lead. The barrels aren’t getting leaded up but my hands are filthy after handling the ammo and now the magazines are getting lead dirty.

At any rate it’s been a fun summer of plinking.

Probably not lead. Remember .22lr has has a waxy, slightly graphite lube.

I'm guessing the lube too. All the .22lr ammo has it in one form or another, and it's that lube that makes things get a little scattered for a while when switching between brands. The good part is that it usually cleans up easily enough.

I remember going into a small shop during the time when .22 ammo was so hard to get. Nobody had any, and I think we all remember that time. Anyway, they had a brick of CCI SV in the 100 round plastic boxes that survived a small fire they had, they were willing to sell me the entire brick, and with it so hard to get, I bought it. Picture how those bricks are stored, all five of the 100 round boxes standing vertically, and the cartridges inside being held in a horizontal position. When I got home, and took a better look, I noticed that all the waxy lube had slid around each bullet to form a little droplet-like bulge hanging from the tips of each one. Probably a result of these being exposed to the heat of the fire. Those were jam-a-matics for me until I individually wiped each and every bullet clean with a solvent damp rag. What a giant PITA, but they worked fine after I cleaned them. The magazines and my feed ramp on my M41 would get caked up too. CCI SV is known for that lube, but having it all on one side of the bullets was not a good thing for me. LOL

interesting rickhem, that makes sense with the heat of the fire. Over the years I’ve owned a couple of S&W 617 10 shot revolvers and currently have a M63 6 shot. All three have had extraction problems shooting HV ammo even after just a few cylinder’s shot. I finally solved the extraction problem by shooting standard velocity. But I agree with the above, they are dirtier than the copper wash Mini Mags I shot prior.
