And succeeded for sure!

RIP Dolly.

I heard today her nephew said that she wanted to be laid to rest on a bed of cotton. She didn’t want to live in eternity wearing hard rhinestones. She deserves this.

She never got political and the one time that Jane Fonda pulled her in she was very unhappy about it and distanced herself from it.
She was humble, friendly, very pretty, very talented, a wonderful person and married to the same man for decades with no children.
The news tonight said she had donated around half a billion dollars in her life time.

Apparently she's very popular in Britain, too. Starts with just audio, but the video kicks in about 5:25.

It's a lot different now, and I actually like much of it, but I didn't really like Country Music as it existed in the mid 20th century, so I never appreciated Dolly Parton as a performer (accept, maybe, for her exceptional physical presence) until she starred in the film Nine to Five. The "sparkle" that people talk about today was evident then in her acting and that's when I first noticed her and finally listened to and appreciated her song writing and musical performance. Just amazing.

She did a few other films that demonstrated her talent for performance, but it's her talent for song writing that now is most exceptional to me.

I Will Always Love You is so perfectly composed and such an anthem to romantic, personal devotion and loyalty as to stand out among the other many thousands she's written and recorded.

Because of her films and later her music, I've since learned about her childhood, her marriage, her musical influences, her businesses, her philanthropy, and her human character. By any standard, nobody has done it better.

I don't believe in heaven (though I wish I could), but if it exists and if there's a checklist for admission, Dolly Parton checks all of them; and while no one can actually know another person's mind, heart, and soul, from where I stand she was pretty much perfect. Heaven should approve.

Dolly's passing was a harsh blow. We'd been planning a trip to Dolly Wood at the end of Sept. May she rest in peace. She was one of the finest entertainers to ever walk this earth.

Tens of millions of kids learned to love reading because of her foundation; tens of millions graduated high school from her hometown region. She single-handedly cut the dropout rate from nearly 40% to less than 6% in one year.

Then the next day, Tim Curry passed, another great character performer with wit and charm to spare.

Finally, Peter Cullen, a long-running voice actor who raised generations of kids on the virtues of honesty, courage, and dedication.

They will all be missed.
