Henry H001 Rifle

Earlier today, I found a used H001 in very nice condition at a local pawn shop. It is a Bayonne, NJ made rifle. It is chambered for .22 S/L/LR but I would have been just as happy if it was a .22 WMR. The wood finish and the metal finish are nice, a small but barely noticeable scratch on the stock and no scratches on the metal, no bulges in the bore, no visible rust or corrosion, no dents in the magazine tube and the rear sight and the front sight hood are there. It is hard to tell for certain but the front sight appears to be shorter than it should be but it may in fact be correct. It came with no scope rings and no hammer extension so I speculate the prior owner never mounted a scope. It had no box nor user's manual but the lack of a box is not important. I have got too many rifle boxes in the garage now to worry about another box. The lack of the box at a pawn shop is hardly surprising.

I speculate the prior owner did not own rifle cleaning equipment since the bore took a good bit of cleaning before the patches started to come out clean. The bore ended up as bright as a mirror, but with some effort. The chamber area appears to be fairly clean from an open-lever inspection. The magazine tube interior and the magazine tube rod/follower were surprising clean.

I do have a few questions for you H001 wizards:

1.) The serial number is 13173xxH. Any idea of the date of manufacture? When did production move from NJ to WI?

2.) I looked on-line and found that I can download a user's manual but my computer won't talk to my printer so I can't print the download. Any idea if Henry will mail me a hard copy via snail mail? Henry customer service is closed today so I won't be able to call customer service 'till Monday.

3.) I would like to clean the interior of the receiver but I am hesitant to open it up without a user's manual in front of me. For those who have done so, is the interior of the receiver fairly easy to clean and reassemble or is it a nightmare? I once had to replace the buffer on a Marlin Model 60 and it was not pleasant. I actually had to use some profanity as a reassembly tool, I don't want to go thru' that again.

4.) I can see this rifle has the potential to use too much ammunition. How do I curb it's appetite?

Congrats on the new to you H001. I love mine, and yes, it eats lots of ammo in no time. I eventually stopped using my speed-loader just to slow it down. As the Cabella's dealer told me when I bought mine, "Oh, Man! Are you gonna have some fun with this." No lie.

Mine is serial number100xxxx and was made in Brooklyn,NY in 1999. Around 2005 the H001 production was moved to NJ. I would guess yours was made some between 2005 and 2010. Write to Henry as i may be way off.
