Mowing and more mowing

Post by Hatchdog » Tue Jun 02, 2026 8:45 am

Our property about 90 miles north of home is 20 acres. I figure it’s about 1/3 field and 2/3 timber. I have neglected the field for a few years and it was looking pretty rough. So I decided to do a major mow and clean the place up.

Day one was the tractor with the 3 point rotary cutter. This works great for the level open areas. But there are some pretty steep places and some tight areas where the tractor doesn’t work well. Also I used the rider mower to clean up the driveway and gate area.

Day two was the quad pulling the tow behind mower deck. This works great and is much more safer on the steep areas plus more maneuverable in tight areas. Also up in the timber I have several trails that the tow behind does a great job of mowing. Otherwise the brush takes over and the trails will disappear. I also used the rider again to tow a sprayer to apply vegetation killer to the driveway.

Two long days between the mowing, driving up and back and loading and unloading equipment on the trailer. I’m bushed (pun intended) :)

It's hard work, but freshly mown lawn and fields look great. Yours look especially beautiful in that setting. That's a great selection of mowing equipment there.

We’ve been making up in rainfall lately, 19 miles north of us received 7-8 inches Saturday night. Flash flood warnings and relief in the drought monitoring. The only problem with getting the rain we’ve been experiencing, is having to mow every 3rd day.☹️

I agree with everything Dave said.
It's a chore getting it all done, but it sure does look good when it is.

We have the same deal, 21 acres. Mow the yard with the zero turn, the pastures and fields with the bush hog. In the spring, about the time you get it all done, time to start over. :D

But we like to keep it looking nice, and keep the copperheads in check.
