Not Enough Shooting

Post by markiver54 » Wed Apr 29, 2026 9:09 pm

Well, here we are at the beginning of May 2026. Unfortunately, I've not sent more than a handful of rounds down ANY range for the last couple years or so. Seems like hurricane Helene is when things kinda paused or slowed things down. So glad we are now able to put most of those trials behind us.

Looking forward to getting back up to the cottage very soon, (probably after Mother's Day). That's the only place I have to freely shoot. I still have a few rounds left of .357 that Vaquero, (Randy) was so kind to give me. The ones I've shot were very accurate. I'm a bit embarrassed that I'm only just now reporting that
Love my .357 BBS, amongst others of course.

Spring has sprung and I'm really looking forward to making this season a memorable one.

I used the CT State provided outdoor range a half dozen times last year, which is all the shooting I did. I hope to do more this year, but it's only available on weekends with sessions in the early morning and afternoon and I'm limited to two sessions per month (if space is available) and, of course, weather is a big consideration. On the plus side, it's free, there are just ten shooting stations, a half dozen range officers are always on duty, and it reaches out to a hundred yards. I only shot my revolvers last year and only at 10 yards. Sadly, my rifle shooting days will likely be rare. Placing the target far enough downrange is just too painful for me to choose to shoot them, though I really do love those Henry's, so I can't say it won't happen at all.

I want to shoot more this year, too. Both 357s and 22s. Here's hoping we both get it done!

I guess my shooting days are about done. Shoulder and arthritis in my hands and all.

I did go to the gun club today to watch and the project I worked on for the last five years is coming to fruition. I served on the Holding Corp of the Legion Post that owned the gun club and Carol served as the gun club attorney. Our goal was to save the gun club for future generations even though the Legion Post went bankrupt.

We succeeded. The gun club is thriving and I watched today as numerous young folks came out to shoot trap for the High School tournaments. The gun club is thriving with scores of young members.

I feel good about that.

I'll be working the guns in the near future, God Willing. The weather should turn very soon and I'll shoot both rifles and handguns, starting with the EDC pair, and the varmint rifles, then just whatever strikes my fancy. Have been wanting to shoot a lot in the last six weeks or so, between weather and projects, haven't gotten it done. Can't wait.

I was out putting up the first of two pop up canopies for my 250yd rifle range. These should help keep the bugs and sun off of us while shooting.

My shoulder isnt fully healed so i've not done the last bit of trimming on the range. Nor have i sunk the 5 t posts and hung the last steel targets.

I haven’t shot much this winter either. Seems just surviving the weather is more important.

Twenty year ago we had a gang of old guys that met every Tuesday morning at the range for shooting and comradery. Then we would all go to lunch together somewhere. It was a great group and we had a lot of fun.

Most of them are now dead and the ones who are not are too old to drive anymore.

I miss that a lot. Nowadays I have the same comradery with the VFW and Vets coffee every Tuesday morning.

It's all good, but still not the same.

Seems like we all still have that mutual interest...shooting. Up at the cottage I am limited to 50 yards or less, but that's ok. What I really need to do is practice with my EDC pistol/pistols. I switch between my Springfield XDs 9mm and my Ruger Security 380. I mostly carry the Ruger because of the light rack. I injured my left hand some time back and it is a lot easier for me. I figure, if I don't stay proficient with them, then I have no business carrying them.

Coop. Sorry the arthritis is setting in. I have it too, just not in my shooting hand or arms yet. Maybe you could still have fun shooting rimfire or something light like my 380. As far as rifles go, as you know, a bench is very helpful.

Anyway, I hope we all get to shoot more this season, and I will report if and when I do. 🙂

I’m sitting up at the property where I have a 75 yard range. I brought a few rifles and handguns to enjoy while I’m here. I did do a bit of shooting a few weeks ago when we were up here doing the annual spring inspection. This week is 357 and friends week. I brought my Henry BBS and S&W 686 both in 357. Also Mrs hatchdog’s Ruger American 22lr and also an AR 15 I haven’t shot in a while. Also a 1911 in 9mm and my S&W 22lr revolver. BUT first I have to get my work done so the firearms will wait a day or two. We’re here until Sunday.

Glad some of you are getting out and hope the rest do so soon. Sorry for the aging process that’s affecting many of us. I’m still shooting occasionally but there are some tasks I just won’t do anymore. Grrrrrrrr :(

Been awhile here too. Other than some functional test rounds from new pistols. No shooting here. By the time I'm done with other chores, just don't feel like getting out and shooting much.

Weather around here hasn’t really lent itself to going outdoors to the range.
But it’s starting to warm up and my shooting partner (granddaughter) is wanting to go next nice weekend.

My club, which consists mostly skeet, trap an sporting clays shooters, is extending the rifle range. We currently have a 200 yd berm and they are clearing for 400 yds. I can't wait to try out the 308 at 400 yds. :P

My grandson in Denmark is taking shooting lessons in towns gun range. He’s wearing a patch over left eye so to train his eyes not to be left eye dominant.
Kind of weird, I have 4 kids and eight grandkids (2grandsons) and none of them are left handed. I’m left handed and the mother’s of the 2 grandsons are left handed?🧐

Went out yesterday with the henry shooting lead 148 and 158 wad cutters. Could not get any of the four loads to group on paper at 100 yds. Check getting a consistent point of impact at 50 was nigh impossible. That rifle simply hates lead bullets.

I had half a tub of 148's left. Filled ttlhe tube and lobbed one at 1/3 man sized ipsc plate at 150yds.

I missed, but only just. The second hit. As did the rest of the tube. I hit it 23 times. So apparently the accuracy is 1/3rd ipsc plat ate 150. I couldnt hit squat at 100, 125, 175 or 200, but 150, ut groups 1/3rd ipsc.

Congrats on the grandson into shooting.
My Grandfather taught me to shoot at about 6 with a BB gun, then moved on to single shot 22s.
My love of shooting has lasted a lifetime and given me a leg up in both my careers.
I taught all my kids to shoot, but few of the Grandkids were interested, thanks to the media, and video games.
WAY back in high school in Florida, they had ROTC and Rifle Teams, which competed all over the state.
There was a range in the basement. I wasn't ON the rifle team, but did shoot with them often during their practice sessions.

I WAS on the Silent Drill Team and performed with them in parades and demos at schools and football games. We earned a letter for our jackets just like the "real" jocks... We drilled with actual M14s with the firing pins removed. They were fully functional and once a year they took us to an Army Base and we got to shoot them. Great Times.
