Another Fortyshooter update on life around the home...

Post by fortyshooter » Sun Apr 19, 2026 8:03 pm

Well my wife is doing as well as she can at the Memory Care facility and last week my sister and her daughter came up from Georgia to visit us. We all had a great time and went to enjoy a great lunch with my wife. Now the sad part....Looks like my dog Buster at 12 years is developing dementia or something else related and a vet visit is planned. He spends most the day running all around the house....getting into corners and confused,,,standing and just staring at nothing....now just taking a poop whenever in the house which is highly unusual since he has always had great house habits and now growls at me if I try to pick him up or sometimes put his leash on. Also a weakness in his right front paw and hindlegs but he will run like crazy around the yard. This started around the time my wife went into Memory Care. I will have to somehow get him to the vet to get a full checkup. So sad to see this and I cannot have a dog around that will try to bite his masters hand. Seems like the worst of life keeps coming my way!

UPDATE.... Put dog in the kitchen with doors shut and a night light with his bedding. Heard some whining few hours later and he has gotten in behind the fridge and the wall! As I pull the fridge out he is all teeth and growling the more the fridge moves full on attack mode here! Damn thing has lost his mind. Go in garage to get some boards to block off the fridge/wall gap and when I try to come in door he is against it and goes off again! Got him in as safe as possible in kitchen now I hope with every possible area blocked off and sadly will call Animal Control in morning and have him picked up. I can't do nothing with him as he is really aggressive to any help. I think I am in the damn Twilight Zone! :(

So sorry Forty, been there. Hard thing to deal with.
You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.

Hang in there Forty. This will pass as well. I've seen some pretty hard times but I got through them and now times are good again.

It's heartbreaking, Forty. I'll be thinking about you and your poor dog all day. It's gonna be a long one for you, I know. Take care of yourself.

I have also been there. As others are saying, this will pass. Hard to imagine right now though, I know.
Prayers for your wife and for you as you endure these very difficult times.

Oh, man I'm sorry to read that. I'm glad your wife is doing as well as could be hoped for. Congrats on the great visit with your daughter.

Now as for you puppers, the two posts, both make me think rabies.

Forty, just a thought, but could there be something environmentally in your home that is causing this in both Wife and dog?
Not wanting to be disrespectful at all, but you might take a good look.
Seems strange that the dog is now demented.

So sad for both your wife and your dog but especially for you. I wonder if your dog is reacting to the loss of your wife in the home.

My wife developed it 4-5 years ago and her mother had it too so I guess my dear wife was the unlucky one of the 5 sisters to get it.
Now with Buster it is a common thing for older dogs to develop it also so I don't think our home has much to do with it. Buster has a vet visit this week
to determine what he has. Also 2 of my wife's sisters have cancer and the younger on died from it. The other one was in remission but it has come back on her again. Just sad luck in life for all this to happen.

Well I could see if he was just depressed looking and not eating but more to it than that. He will wander around the house and just stare at the walls and won't respond to me calling his name and has behavior changes he did not have before. Will find out more after his vet visit and do hope it is something else going on.
Thank you guys for sharing your concerns for us....means a lot!
