Range Report: Winchester Model 68

Great to see a range report from way out yonder in the Northwest! Very nice bolt action 22 shooter too! We are in Summer weather this week with highs in the mid 80's and high pollen count too. Hoping I can get out next week as it supposed to be 60's again with rain coming up on Easter Sunday.
I have a VERY special handgun to try out too....birthday present to myself!

That’s a good looking old rifle Gene. I do look through the vintage guns at local shops. Still haven’t found one that is in good enough shape to bring home.

Most are really beat up but occasionally a good one will show up.

I have an old one that has a broken part, my kids learned to shoot on it. Recently, my daughter found the same one. She discovered it's missing a different part. Neither part is easy to locate. Her gunsmith tried to find her part, then tried to adapt one. Next time she visits, I'll give her mine and her smith can build her a working gun and a nice wallhanger from the two.

It's a Winchester Single Shot just like Sir Henry's, perhaps the same model, or close.

I'll dig it out of the safe before it leaves. When it's fixed, it'll be three hours away at the OK/TX Border. I'm still waiting for pictures of the wedding present I made her and mailed from VA, and her daughter is now nineteen. I love the girl, but getting her to send a pic is like getting a lab to leave the pool.

I checked my insurance pics... it's a Winchester Model 60 single shot. I'm guessing from the numbers, it's an earlier version of the same gun you have.

I bought the first version of the gun I gave to the daughter back in the 90s from a pawn shop to use to teach the four kids to shoot long guns. Single shot, one round at a time. Same way I was taught by MY Grandfather. Shoot, discuss, reload, carefully shoot, discuss. Repeat.

After all the kids had grown up and moved away, I gave the gun to my daughter to teach HER daughter when I moved to Oklahoma. She passed it on to her brother to teach his kids, She recently came across another and it had a part fail. When my Father in Law passed, my son brought several of his guns and dropped them off.
Mixed in among them? Another model 60, but the firing pin would not stay locked back in the fire position. Careful inspection showed the key piece across the bottom of the bolt had broken. You can find bolts, but they are expensive. $100 or more.

The 60 and 68 are similar and some parts are interchangeable. The main difference is the stock and sights with the 68 having peep sights.

Those old .22's sure take us back to simpler times. Blued steel, wood stocks, the Lone Ranger, Gunsmoke, 283 Chevies .......
