Got myself a Unicorn for my birthday !

Post by fortyshooter » Fri Apr 03, 2026 1:46 pm

Well in the world of derringers this has to qualify as one like one chambered in 45 Winchester Magnum :o  I was looking around on Guns International couple weeks ago in the derringer section and this listing came up at a BassPro in Memphis Tn. Thought it was a typo on the caliber and called the store and they confirmed what it was! Made by American Derringer in Waco Texas they build or used to do so custom derringers in a lot of calibers as the order comes in. I sent an email off to the lady who ran the business not knowing if I would get a reply since I think they have closed shop and got a reply that they did make very few of them due to recoil issues and not surprised. I placed the order and picked it up last week. The serial number according to American Derringer was confirmed to be a 1983 year build and it has not been fired hardly at all. The 45 Win Mag is a 40,000 pis load and can't imagine dropping the hammer on a factory load so got some new Starline brass and have loaded some at lower level like a Colt 45 load. I found a Sierra load manual and they list lighter Colt like loads for 45 Win Mag which are lighter than the factory 1300-1600 FPS thru a 6 inch barrel.

Anyway got it for a really good price since the store did not know much about it and it's caliber. Have done several searches and only one that comes up is the one I bought. A unicorn derringer for sure! Range time with it next week!

Oooohhhh, that's gonna hurt. I had a .44 Mag that I finally sold due to recoil.
Shooting should be fun, not painful.

That looks very interesting. Looking forward to your range support.

Oh yeah, I can feel that pain now. More power to you. LOL.
Oh, BTW, Happy Birthday. :D

Will have face shield and glove on for my first rounds even though they are 45 Colt loads. The 230 XTP running with 8.0 Unique and the 200 XTP at 8.5
The load manual shows the 230 XTP starting load at 8.9 of Unique rated at 900 FPS out of a 6.5 inch barrel LAR Grizzly semi auto pistol. The 200 XTP start load they show at 9.9 Unique. Now remember the Win Mag case just a touch shorter than a 45 Colt case 1.198 vs 1.285 for 45 Colt.
