Re: The big winter storm a comin!
Back when I lived in Nebraska for a couple winters, I remember that when they predicted 12 inches or more of snow, we'd normally just get a dusting. When they predicted rain ending in a few snow showers, that was when we got lots and lots of snow.

the ice that coated our area is rapidly and mostly disappeared .... they say there is a strong possibility of another one roaring in over this coming weekend

Re: The big winter storm a comin!
What we now have is hard slick ice coating over top of 3 inch of snow and with temps staying below 33 F it is near impossible to walk on...like a skating ring all around the yard! Buster has a hard time trying to poop squat without sliding away!
Now they say a coastal storm may come thru again this weekend to pack more on top. Driveway is cleared and dry after clearing it right after last storm and streets are clear.

Hatchdog, I like that
. Might be a little hard on the fairways.
Forty, I don't expect to see anything but packed snow in the driveway for at least another month
This last blow on Monday I cleared my property to get my car in may driveway and then 3 neighbors. As long as you are trying to do for yourself I will help.

Re: The big winter storm a comin!
The forecast is up to about 2 1/2 inches for tomorrow. That's a blizzard around here. I'm hoping the roads are going to be clear afterwards. I would like to go take some pictures with snow, but since It's supposed to get down into the teens tomorrow night, I'm thinking the roads are going to be too slippery for travel. Although I haven't had much experience lately, I can drive in snow. Having said that, I'm not reckless, either. A few pictures aren't worth a side trip into the ditch, or a tree.

Re: The big winter storm a comin!
snow and single digit night temps are supposed to move in around midnight .... I turn 80 later this year and I've only seen snow on the beach a couple of times .... they are calling for a foot or better of snow at the Outer Banks .... the forecast down there includes a "white-out blizzard" warning .... that is the first ever such warning down there
there isn't a "snow plow" in this state .... plenty of dump trucks with scrape blades but no snow plows .... our only effective snow removal is for warmer temps to move in

Re: The big winter storm a coming out.
Front end loaders, road graders and other heavy equipment will do in a pinch. Be safe, be careful. With luck it won't be as bad as they are predicting.

North Carolina utilizes a substantial fleet of snow plows and, as of January 2026, the NCDOT has over 1,250 dump trucks equipped with plows, spreaders, and roughly 900+ additional contract trucks available for winter weather events.
Key details regarding NC snow removal:
Operations: The NCDOT treats roads with brine, salt, and sand, focusing on primary routes (interstates, major highways) first before moving to secondary, lower-volume roads.
Resources: There are over 2,100 trained employees and 200+ motor graders prepared to manage snow and ice.
Tracking: Some areas, such as Greensboro, offer online trackers for snow removal progress.
Emergency Measures: Crews often work 12-hour, 24-hour shifts to clear major routes, especially in the Piedmont and mountain regions.
While the state is prepared for snow, the amount of winter weather can vary significantly, with less snow on average over the last four decades.

Re: The big winter storm a comin!
A snowstorm is MUCH more manageable than an ice storm. I personally am not really worried about our approaching storm.
20 years in the Chicago area hardened me against winter weather.
Consider our members up north. This is routine for them.
I DO, hate Winter though.

We had 70 today in Pinellas County Florida but that's about it for several days as strong winds and low temps are coming. If we have rolling blackouts like we had in Christmas 83 then I have two cellulose oxidizers for backup heat.

Re: The big winter storm a comin!
We are supposed to get 3 inches of snow today. Currently, the sun is shining, and it's right at freezing outside. I just hope we don't get an ice storm. Fortunately, none of the outlets are predicting that.

Re: The big winter storm a coming out.
Front end loaders and road graders are common around here. The graders have a special blade out front and then a wing to the side. Then there is a blade on the back to pull the snow forward so they donāt plow you in. Iām told one year they had to use a huge front in loader to dig out my driveway. It was ten feet deep and they scooped it and hauled it further away as they couldnāt plow it to the side. The then current owners were elderly and they needed to go to the hospital. Large parking lots are also cleared with front loaders. The common sand trucks with plows are used on the main roads and almost all home owner with a pickup has a plow on the front.
Our current two feet of snow is nothing compared to decades past. At least thatās what Iām told. They had to walk 20 miles to school and it was uphill both ways. And they didnāt have shoes.

Re: The big winter storm a comin!
9:30AM on Sat Jan 31 .... our big snow that was supposed to start falling before midnight may be starting to show itself .... back when I was growing up in the NC mountains we'd say its "spit'n snow" .... they have reduced our accumulation prediction to 1 to 3" .... while our snow projections are dropping, our temperature is 23 right now and they say it will only rise another degree before dropping back to an overnight low of 13 .... our part of NC is officially classified as semitropical .... to say temperatures like this hurt would be an understatement .... unless something unexpected surfaces, we don't plan to go anywhere today and maybe not tomorrow .... history has taught me that is best for our vehicles to stay off the road for a while after they have been heavily salted and brined
