We just lost our last lion,Roman, at the sanctuary that I volunteer at. He was the last of 6 rescues that we received from the Tiger King Ranch.
I'm sorry to read about Roman. It must be especially hard on the staff who for years compassionately nurtured him and others. My condolences.

I hope you'll start a thread here to share pics and stories from the sanctuary. What a rewarding experience it must be.

Cold and foggy at Magnolia this morning. I missed the eagle fight by about 5 minutes. Friend of mine got some really cool shots of the two going after each other with talons extended. The heavy fog gave things a different look.

Bad hair day.

This tern posed nicely for me and allowed me to get within about 10 feet or so from it.

This was my favorite of the day. Reminds me a little of a studio portrait. Probably just the background and soft lighting.

I'm torn between 7940 and 7518 for the very same reason. Crisp, well lighted images with soft neutral backgrounds. Like studio portraits, but not. Excellent work. Thanks.

7518 looks almost 3D. I’ve noticed that is some other pics you have posted. Nice work! :D

Visual separation of the background and the subject is one of the things you look for when setting up an image. There are multiple factors that contribute to that separation. Distance from camera to subject, distance from subject to background, aperture, focal length, color and "busyness" difference between subject and background.

In this case, I was using the max aperture, a long focal length, lots of distance between subject and background, and a very smooth/neutral background.

This is another from that string. This was early on, I gradually moved closer and switched to a vertical orientation. Always take an insurance shot before moving up on a subject.

And this one just begs for a B&W treatment.
