Day of the Jackal. MAB pistol

Post by Hatchdog » Sat Dec 06, 2025 9:20 am

My wife and I just finished season one of The Day of the Jackal on the Peacock channel. Great show featuring a highly skilled sniper (assassin). The title was familiar to me so I looked it up and it was originally a novel written in 1971. Also there was a movie made about the book that I haven’t seen.

So right now I’m reading the novel, just getting started with it and read a part where one character handed a pistol to another. The pistol was described as a MAB 9mm. Funny, I have a MAB pistol in 32 acp that was my dad’s for as long as I can remember. In my research when I got it from my brother I found the MAB to be a French made military/police pistol later to also be in the commercial market. The book is based in France so it makes sense. Just a fun coincidence.

Here’s the pistol, these pics were taken when I first got it and I have cleaned up the rust. I believe my dad stored it in the holster…..tsk tsk tsk.

Nice pistol!
The movie Day Of The Jackal, which was from the early 70s, was worth the watch. Especially from a shooter's perspective. He uses a special, custom rifle and ammo, and you find yourself pulling for him as the story unfolds. Movies often differ from the book, but I'm sure this one will also have you doing the same thing.
I've not seen the series, but I'm going to add it to the short list, sounds like something I'd like.
Good post!

There are two movies. Both are worthy of a watch. The early one is excellent, I saw it in the theater when you could go in for the first show and just stay... I would.

The second has Bruce Willis, Richard Gere, and a number of other big names. It's top notch. Jack Black makes an early career appearance.
You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

I don't look back at the things I can't do anymore with regret, I just look forward to the things I still can.

This is exactly what we experienced and in fact had a conversation about it. It just doesn’t seem right to cheer for an assassin over the police.
