Small Game Carbine

Post by Stump » Fri Dec 05, 2025 9:08 am

Last week I ordered a new SGC in 22lr and yesterday I picked it up from my FFL. This is my second SGC, the first one I bought a few years ago in 22 mag that has been great, hoping this second one is as well. The rifle looks good and everything seems to function fine, the trigger is better than I expected. First thing I did when I got it home was disassemble and clean it, this rifle was very dry with almost no lube in it. The barrel was filthy, I've never seen a new rile with this dirty of a barrel. A wet patch and a wet nylon brush and many dry patches, still showing lots of embedded dirt. Switched to a Brass brush and many more dry patches and cleaned it up finally, very strange. Henry must put something in the barrel to protect it, that seemed hard to remove, but it's bright and shinny now. Anyway very happy with it and looking forward to getting lots of use from it, this was a Christmas gift to myself. Going to scope it with a 3-9 Leupold and a BKL mount, should be a little squirrel machine and a good range carbine.

That’s going to be a great set up. You must have been a very good boy this year for Santa to reward you so wonderfully. :D

Well with the temps today in PA at 19 degrees, and my range closed for hunting season, it's going to be a few days before I get out and shoot it. But I'll be there first halfway decent day with sunshine seeing how it shoots. I'm going to shorten the stock to a 13" LOP tomorrow to add to it's handiness. Should be done at that point and ready for some squirrels.

Ok, I've got a question and I'm a bit confused on this new SGC. This carbine has no large loop lever on it, is this something Henry Changed? Honestly I didn't even notice it at the FFL, and I've looked on Henry's website and the vendors website, and both show and state a large loop lever. The model # engrave on the bottom of the receiver is H001TLP which is a SGC. My older 22mag SGC is correct and has it, I'm not understanding this? It's by no means a deal breaker for me as I slightly prefer the regular loop, but it leaves me with unanswered questions....
Why was the barrel so filthy as if it had 100 rounds of dirty ammo shot through it, but yet the inside of the receiver was pristine?
And where is the lever?

That doesn't sound like something that Henry would allow to escape from the factory. I'd contact them with the details and a picture. Something ain't right.
Bellum Omnium Contra Omnes is rapidly becoming a reality (11/2023). Para Bellum.
