410 Handguns,

Post by graywolf » Wed Dec 03, 2025 9:32 pm

I've thought for a long time off and on about getting a Taurus public defender or s&w governor. Anyone have any thoughts on them. I've had folks tell me they only good for about 5 yards using birdshot. If that's true, I don't think I'd want one. Can anyone give me some advice.

I'd look for range reports and tests on YouTube and see how they actually perform in the videos. I haven't shot one, so I can't really say, but I'd think it would depend on your proposed use.... as to how effective they'd be.

I have a Taurus Judge. I'm not happy with it.
Here is a review that matches my experience with it.

I had one with the 3" cylinder and barrel when they were first introduced, but I sold it a few years later and haven't missed it one bit.

I've not really heard anything positive about them. I would think their usefulness would be quite limited.

A close friend of mine has one and uses it for self defense. Ive shot it and the accuracy of the 45 colt in one is terrible. The 410 range is short. I see it as only a self defense gun myself.

Everybody, Thanks for the help. All pretty much what I was thinking. Mags, that article nails it. I think I'm gonna pass on getting one. At least for now. It was gonna be for rattlesnakes. But I'm not able to walk these woods like I used to, so don't really need it. I might be better off to get something like .38 special and shoot shotshells with it.

I have more than one friend who uses a pocket gun, like a 38, with shotshells for dealing with snakes.

I agree. Probably more practical to go with 38 or something similar that will shoot snake shot, as well as having some accuracy for other purposes.

That's sounding good. I'm gonna start researching something along them lines. It would need to be a revolver to shoot shotshells, and I need it to be small and light enough to carry. When I get off here, I'm gonna start looking at .38 revolvers.
