Big Boy 327

The recently announced Big Boys in 327 Federal Magnum are an interesting move for Henry. The 327 is a pretty cool caliber, but one that has not really caught on much yet. Ruger and Federal developed it, and Ruger chambers some revolvers in it. It's a caliber that packs some punch, but with less recoil than 357 magnum. Guns chambered for 327 can also shoot two or three other 32 revolver cartridges- which is good, because 327 factory ammo is not easy to find. Maybe now ammo for it will become more common.

Seems like an odd choice to me as well. If I had to place an over/under on the number of rifles they'd sell in that caliber in the first year I'd set it around 20. And then maybe take the under....

I suppose it isn't difficult for new calibers to be added to the lineup. New barrel and bolt?

I see guys asking for Ruger to bring back the SP101 in 327 federal as well. Most likely Ruger stopped production because demand wasn't that strong.

I have a RUGER single seven single six in 32 mag and an LCR in 327 great round can't wait for the big boy.

If you don't know about the 32mag. and 327 you don't know what your missing. Try one you will like it, by the way if you reload you can shoot the 327 cheaper than a 22 with more power than a 38 and close to 357 velocities, and yes Ruger is still making 327's.

The 327 has stumbled a bit, ever since it was introduced, due to inconsistent ammo availability. Ruger dropped the original SP101, GP100 and Blackhawk in 327 as a result, but it's now back in the LCR and the SP, as well as the Single Seven, which is distributor exclusive version of the Single Six. That's the one I have and love it. Would make a great pair with the Henry.


The American Eagle 100 grain loads are hot and nasty in a little gun like the LCR. Don't expect a huge improvement over a 357, but there are now some very pleasant shooting SD loads for the 327, now. With my Seven, an afternoon of shooting the very mild 32 H&R, makes for a lot of fun.

There have been some folks who have actually used a 327 for deer and it is doable, I suspect, for smaller southern deer. Not sure I'd want to use if for our big northern deer even if it was legal. Definitely plenty, though, for coyotes and such. Very flat shooting round. In my Single Seven, I can bounce back and forth between 10 and 50 yards and even more and keep the same POA. Supposedly clocks in at about 1500 fps + with factory 100 grain ammo in my Seven. Be an even flatter shooting round in a rifle. Would definitely get you up into 357 revolver power levels in a rifle.

The great advantage off the 327 is that it can also shoot the 32 H&R, the 32 S&W Long, the 32 S&W, and, in a pinch, the 32 auto, though accuracy will take a hit. I've always loved 32 revolvers, especially the 32 H&R, so I'm very much a fan of the 327. If you're not into 32s, though, not sure how much it would offer over a 357.

NCG. Where did you find those grips. Sweet. When my wife goes to the rang with me she loves the single seven and never shoots less than 100 rounds of 32 mag. though that's fine with me I then have brass to reload.

Got those from Altamont. They're imitation stag. They actually got sent by mistake. I had ordered a different set, but they sent the stag set by mistake. Liked them so much, just kept them. Very comfy. Unlike true stag, these have no sharp edges, plus, they are thicker than the factory wood grips and I like that for control with the hottest 327 loads.

I guess I just don't see the appeal over a 357. How do the ballistics compare?

I haven't had the pleasure in a rifle. But it should shoot flatter and faster.

The real design appeal was that you could make a hard hitting 6 round small frame revolver.

I suppose it's like comparing .30-06 to .270 in a rifle. For most applications, one will do what the other will do.

My interest is in the economical reload. A .32 H&R with a bit more oomph.

It should make a great coyote rifle.
