New long range range

Post by GunnyGene » Tue Aug 12, 2025 6:35 am

MS doesn't have many ranges for long distance rifle, but a new one is opening up in Sept. 1500 yds. It's too far for me to drive, and I don't have a gun (or eyeballs) capable of that range anyway, but there are several guys I know that are pretty excited about it. :)

That’s a long ways. I don’t ever remember shooting pass 600 yards.

.85 mile. At that distance you have to start accounting for spin drift and the rotation of the planet. Since this range is laid out S to N, spin drift (assuming a clockwise rifling) may counteract the W to E rotation of the planet to some degree. At this latitude, the earth rotation is 772mph (1132fps). The bullet will retain most of that rotational velocity during it's flight to the target, but will still lag behind the target motion, meaning you'll have to dial in several inches of right windage to compensate. And that's on top of atmospheric conditions. A ballistic calculator is essential equipment in this realm and longer. :? ;)

It’s amazing how technical long range shooting is. When I used to shoot 600 yards thankfully all I had to consider was the wind. (Other than all the normal shooting processes of course). I don’t think my dainbramged mind could handle shooting to a mile. But that’s a wonderful opportunity for those capable.

It's not only technical, it's very expensive. And the longer the range the more expensive it gets: $20,000and up. Luckily, you can get in relatively cheap (under $2000) if you do long range at the .22lr level, which generally means 200>400yds. The Ruger Precision Rimfire is an excellent low budget starter rifle. $600 for the rifle, and $500 or so for a scope. What's left over can be used for suitable range gear and ammo.

We compete in the National Match series in the Corps. That's shooting back to six hundred yards with open sights. I used a match grade M14 on that series, shooting factory National Match ammo from the 1960s. The civilians shooting next to us asked if we reloaded, and when we said no, asked if we minded if THEY policed our brass after each string of fire. Ten Marines on the team, three days of various matches and practice, two cases of ammo. Those guys left really happy.

by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.

My longest is 200yds with a scoped rifle. I am in awe of anyone who can shoot 1000+ yards with accuracy.

How about 30,000yds (17 miles)? Fired from a moving platform. ;)

I use to shoot 1000 yards with Shiloh Sharps rifles. 45-70 and 45-100. Bullets were cast by me and also loaded by me with black powder. Ive never shot any high power at that distance but it sure was fun with the old buffalo rifles. Its a tough game and your spotter is important to being able to shoot good scores at that distance. It takes a lot of practice and time. More time than I could give after 8 years of it and I finally gave it up.

How about shooting at a 525' moving target (the asteroid Dimorphos) 6 million miles from the Earth (which is also flying around in space) and hitting it within 56' of dead center? Wow! :o
