2 years with the Mach E

It's been 2 years of awesome. The car is perfect for my retired lifestyle.

The only time I pull in to a gas station is to clean the windshield. Yes, I'm that guy from the commercial

Just got the Mach it's annual detail and another refresh of the ceramic coating.

I charge it from my solar system and !00% nothing from the grid...

I'm racking up the miles @ 3,300

It looks awesome, but I don't think it has the range to work out here. Minimum round trips are about sixty miles, every time we leave the house, most are a hundred miles. My trips to the VA in OKC are about a hundred and fifty, and if we tie in other OKC errands when we go, we might log a couple hundred or more on the day. I imagine it would be great for running around town if you are in an urban setting.

They are not for everyone for sure.

My range on a full battery is 240 miles. They have models with the extended range battery that go 310 miles.

My cousins Mercedes EQS has over a 400 mile range.

I totally get why they are not for most people.

During the winter in cold climates the range drops dramatically. I live in California so winter is not an issue where I live.

I'm glad your car is working well for you Coach. I'm especially pleased that you can charge it up from your own solar system. I know that self sufficiency was probably costly, but now is paying off. If your lifestyle is right for it, great.

Over beer and wings yesterday afternoon with our gun club friends the conversation turned to electric vehicles. One of the group is interested in buying one and another friend of the group has had a Tesla for several years he is trying to sell. Either sell or put in a new battery. It turns out the battery is around $20,000 and he is considering it.
So what happens to the old battery? How long is the pay off time for the installation of solar to charge the vehicle. What is the cost per mile recharging at public charging stations.
One of our group's son in law has the EMustang and he drives it daily, but to drive it north to his father in laws cabin on the lake stretches the range and then it takes a while to recharge in 110 for the drive back home. He says ironically that he gets his best mileage in the city as the dynamic braking helps with the overall power usage unlike the Interstate where he just goes for long stretches without the braking.
I find all this interesting as I think the E vehicles have a niche, but not best for overall use.

The Mach E comes with a 8 year 80% battery efficiency warranty.

After 8 years, I usually get a new car in the 10 year range because new technology and things tend to start failing on most cars.

As for DCFC fast charging the prices vary depending on what company you choose to use. They all have subscription fees to get discounts and usually pay for themselves after one or two charging stops.

I have only charged at public charges twice. That was to get home from Huntington Beach to the Bay Area. My Escape died on the trip to see family.

Some public fast chargers price by the minute. Others by the Kw. Some others have peak congestion pricing and jack it up during the busy times.

One nice feature now is that Tesla charging infrastructure has opened up with the use of an adapter.

They do get better mileage in the city vs highway. Once you pass 70 it sucks more juice…

My wife’s cousin has a Tesla. She and her husband live here in the summer and go to So Cal in the winter. They use the Tesla for the trip and have had great success with the charging along the way. It’s a science planning your trip but the software in the car helps. Not only does it tell you how many miles your have remaining but the locations of chargers in the range and also if they are occupied. Pretty incredible to simple ole’ me.

Among close friends and family I haven't seen or heard of any high tech feature failures going back to 1998. The failures/wear-out that have happened have been the no tech mechanical things. Water pumps, brakes, hoses, front differential, tail gate latch among the things that have wore out. I have a 2007 Prius, 18 years old, no problems, except the dead batteries in the tire pressure sensors. Our 2015 car (nothing) and 2000 pickup, just and O2 sensor.

I've heard more in the news about EV problems, then problems with combustion engine vehicles, but then a lot of that hearsay could be news obsession with EV technology.

I'm at at a point in life where I have no plans to buy any more vehicles.

It sounds like EV stuff (outside of Tesla) is getting the problems sorted out and Coach I'm glad to see that you got a good one.
