Hunting class air pistol, HW44

After selling the Contenders, we wanted to use some of the cash to invest in more air guns and this PCP pistol was first on the list. It's the HW44 in 177 and it shoots 8 plus grain pellets between 800 and 850 fps, so it is definitely hunting class. It's also features a 10 round magazine and side lever cocking, so very much state of the art.


Trigger is, well, awesome. It is two stage and breaks crisp, no creep under 2 pounds, but it is adjustable if you want to go lighter. I'm good with the way it came out of the box, though.

The scope is a B&L 4-12x AO riflescope which I used for accuracy testing, though I may change to something smaller at some point. The 44 has an accessory rail which allows me to add a bipod, so even at 12x, I get a nice stable sight picture. Very shootable rig.


I tried some lighter pellets under 8 grains, but this HW 44 does much better with the heavier stuff. Pretty easy with this HW 44 to keep groups well under an inch at 30 yards with the right pellet, though. All in all, this air pistol gets me close to what I was getting with my Contender pistols at this distance, so very pleased.

Yeah, it looks pretty tactical and ultra modernistic and it actually is. It's a polymer gun, throughout. It's based on the HW110, the HW PCP rifle, an all polymer rifle. Takes the same magazines. Not my favorite way to go, but PCP has gone ultra modern/modular for some time, now.

Functionally, though, it is excellent. That silencer on the front makes it very quiet. You could shoot it in any backyard. The grip is a more conventional, all around use grip that allows for a comfortable two hand hold, just as with regular handguns. This is quite a departure from the Olympic air pistol grips designed for a one hand hold that I have on my other accurate air pistols. The velocity is also something you will never see on Olympic class air pistols. It's also setup for an optics mount and has the accessory rail, also something you won't find on Olympic air pistols. Last, it is a 10 shot repeater, so nice not having to fumble with pellets shooting single shot.

Weight is about 46 ounces without a scope, so basically the same as a typical 357 revolver, even though it looks much larger. It should work very well with a red dot. I may try that.

It kind of reminds me of a cross between a Ruger Charger and an AR15.
