Vintage S&W revolvers added, part 1

Post by North Country Gal » Sat May 31, 2025 12:04 pm

Yeah, I'm still working to convert our collection over to revolvers after selling off the TC Contenders, but so far I've had some great luck finding the small J frame Smith carry revolvers that have been one of my priorities, so I'll report on these, first.

Now, let me say that I have no illusions about using a J frame Smith in a shoot out against a bunch of double stack semi autos, of course, but I have a lot of experience shooting J frame Smiths and I do have a use for one of these little gems that I can carry in a pocket or a purse. Here goes.

1968 Chief's Special, Model 36 no dash

This one is collectible. I bought it to carry and shoot, though, at least that was my intention. Now, this one will stay in the box. I'll explain, in bit. I bought it from a reputable local collector I know, who in turn bought it from a retired Chicago cop, who had it in his collection. Needless to say, the trigger in SA and DA is superb.

For those who don't know, the Model 36 Smith is the iconic detective's carry gun and also the duty officer's backup gun, back in the day when LEOs were carrying revolvers. The Model 36 may also be the most seen revolver in movies and TV shows that feature people using revolvers.

1988 Chief's Special, Model 36-3, 38 Special

After buying the above Model 36, I went to our local LGS to pick up some ammo the next day and, wouldn't you know it, there was another Model 36. Now, I have gone years waiting to find even one Model 36 for sale in our area, and here was another one the next day. This later 36 does not have a pinned barrel like the '68, but it is still a no lock, plus the price was much nicer, so I bought it. This one will be my carry gun, instead of the 1968 version. The trigger is equally nice.

1989 (?) Model 49 Body guard, 38 Special

After the Model 36 came out in 1950, it was an instant hit, the only complaint being that some folks had issues with the exposed hammer catching on clothing when it was drawn. The Model 49 with the hammer covered with a shroud was Smith's answer. Yes, it looks a bit odd, but one feature I love about the Model 49 is that you can still shoot it easily in single action because the hammer is still accessible. Here's how.

Again, great trigger, as you would expect on vintage Smiths. Not sure if that grip was standard or if it was added at some point, but that style of combat grip was used on a number of Smith revolvers in the late 80s and 90s. I really like the grip, though, so it will stay.

By the way, the original Bodyguard was an alloy frame gun, but some LEOs requested an all steel version, so the all steel Model 49 came out after the alloy version. S&W, of course, still makes all kinds of alloy Airweight hammerless options and they are very popular, even win this day of autoloaders. Finding the all steel 49, though, is a lot tougher.

So here's my carry J frames. I figure I might as well carry classics when I carry and these surely are that.

So that's it for J frame Smiths now in the collection. Next up will be some gorgeous K frame Smiths. Stay tuned.

Your local gun shop must have the largest stock in the state. You seem to come up with an astounding amount of vintage firearms.
Those are all very nice. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. Sometimes I think it's more me being some kind of vintage gun magnet or something. I think they show up just before I walk in the door. Yeah, kind of spooky at times.

Must be nice to have a gun shop in the area like that. Here many are closing because of the new laws that are going into effect to keep us all safer.

There you go hitting us with another round of pretty guns. I like the way the 88 matches so well with the holster. That not hammerless/hammerless model is really cool. Your North Woods Gun Whisperer magic is strong.

Tina had her Model 60 J frame stolen a couple years after we were married. I pulled my Airweight 642 out of the safe and she continued to roll, but missed her Chief's Special. Recently she had been wanting to replace it, but the new Chief's Specials are 357s. A little stretched frame, and slightly heavier. I have been checking the FEW gun shops in the area, and the two main gunshops I know of when I made my last two VA appointments. Not one Model 60 or 36 to be found. I hear the same line:

"We have plenty of used 642s but people don't let go of the old 36s and 60s, those classics stay home." ;) "If we do get one in, they don't last long, usually a day, maybe two."

I bought her the Taurus 856, and she carried that for a while, but it wasn't the same...
I'm still looking. 8-)
I'll eventually stumble onto one.
Meanwhile, she has the 642 and I have the 340PD.

Those are very nice J frames NCG. I agree, if you can just collect the no dash 36, good. The other 36-3 will provide great service. The model 49 is a very solid choice. I prefer the shrouded J frames and detrective specials. They are a thinking man / woman's gun.
My EDC is a 640 pro. It replaced a 638, which is now on woods patrol if I want something more potent than a .22lr when out and about around the homestead. I think a 649 configured like the 640 pro would be a spectacular J frame.

I'm looking forward to the K frames.

There’s just something about a J frame….especially a 2” blue version.

I used to work with a guy who collected only J frames. He had a drawer full of them. Beautiful guns for sure as yours are NCG.

Thanks, folks. My arthritis has been acting up the last few days, but having no issues working the little J frames, as per my plan.

I would love to find a model 60, too, but very true that folks don't ket go of steel J frames. That's also been my experience. I like the Airweights, too, but the steel J frames have a nicer heft to them. Still, a 340PD is an awesome carry gun.

Gotta say, a 640 Pro would be an awesome woods carry gun, too. Wow!

Wil post about the K frames, soon. Oh, and the single actions have not been overlooked. :)

The M&P 340PD Scandium with it's night sights and 357 magnum power has been my favorite since Tina found it as a gift when I was recovering from a surgery. It's fine with wadcutters, okay with 38 special 158 grain. Not too pleasant with 38 Plus P, but a Beast with full house 357 magnums. That's what I call her, "The Beast." During Practice sessions, I'll shoot 158 Grain 38 specials, but always finish with a few +P and / or magnums. (Then I file the OSHA paperwork.)

Since I added the Smith Oversized Wood grips it's not as bad and that doesn't affect the concealment much, does help the shootability a LOT.

As you can see, if you had to point 'er at someone they would have NO doubt it was loaded.
