158 gr Lead Round Nose

Post by sibyrnes » Fri May 16, 2025 3:44 pm

Several years ago I got a good deal on 1000 rounds of Federal .38 Special 158 Lead Round Nose bullets. I got a chance to try them out in my new Henry Big Boy 357 today. Installed a set of Hi Viz sights and and shot a three shot group, seated(elbows on knees) at 30 yards. I'm pretty happy with the results!

OK, just send me $2500.00 shipping and "handling fees" and I'll get it out the door :)

Yeah, that rifle and results definitely leaves me wanting. Well done brother.
I'd shoot like that all day, if I could get back up, lol.

You bought just the bullets, or complete cartridges? If it was the former, I'd ask for the rest of the load recipe.

My only experience with factory 158 LRN was in using it for Distinguished Revolver matches. Back then, it was mandated that the ammo be factory, not reloads, and be 158 grain LRN. I had been shooting 148 HBWC reloads, with mine being on the slower side. Back then, Blazer and American Eagle made 158 LRN ammo, and both shot about the same for me in my revolver with my limited testing. I will say that the points I lost were not because of the ammo.
That's some great shooting with your Big Boy, varmints beware!

Got 20 boxes of these I have been sitting on for years. Now I got a good use for them!

Fantastic shooting! Can you still find that ammo? I shoot a lot of 158 gr RNFP bullets from Missouri Bullets and they shoot very well in 38 Special or mid level 357 Mag in my Henry and revolvers.
