So, everything is a learning process.

Here is my first attempt at creating a few 75-grain .224 bullets. The plan was to use the 8S ogive. I used a 0.8000 long jacket. They averaged 15 grains, which gave me a core weight of 60 grains.

Cutting cores, the cut puts them at 62-63 grains.

Swaging the cores into the 0.800 jackets.

The swaged jackets and cores. At this point, I was beginning to think that I might have chosen too short a jacket.
Image

The best of the results. I swaged these with the 8S ogive, but, as I mentioned, I'd chosen a jacket that was too small. Quite a bit of lead was squirted out the tip. I swapped out for the 8S lead tip die, but, it didn't work out well. These three are done with the 6S lead tip die. You can see the ogive change in the bullet.

For the 8S lead tip die to work, I'd need a shorter jacket or more lead in the core. A 0.750 jacket probably would have been better with these 60-grain cores. If I wanted an open-tip bullet, I'd probably need a 0.900 jacket.

Here are some other results. There are some 4S, 6S, 8S ogive examples in the groups. For the type of shooting I plan to do, I'm more interested in an open tip bullet, but if I happen to pick up a bolt gun I can see the value in the lead tip bullets.

Lessons learned. I'll need to research the ratio of jacket lengths and core weights to finished bullet weights a bit more. Die spacing is critical, but doesn't seem to be that difficult. If I'd not tried 4S, 6S, 8S, 4S LT, 6S LT, 8S LT dies I think I would have had more even results.

Ideally, I'm looking to make a 75-grain open tip, maybe 77. I'll keep at it, playing around until I find my go-to jacket and core weight combo.

This is my second attempt. This time, I used 0.930 jackets. I've had a better outcome, but I think I need a better lube. There's some crushing that I think is due to lube buildup.

Cut wire cores, 62 grains

Swaged cores, 58.6 grains

Cores swaged into the jackets.

The end result.

I'm thinking the creasing might be a couple of things. I've the Die ram set to deep, and it's crushing the bullet. The other possibility is that I'm using the wrong swaging lube. I've some coming from RCE, and hope that will mitigate most of the damage. On the plus side, the weight is pretty consistent.

In this image, you can see the first couple of bullets I swaged. I'd turned the seating stem 1.5 turns after the die met resistance. I backed it back off, but maybe I didn't back it off far enough.

Now that I have my second WH-2 press up and running I thought it time to do a second run of 77 grain bullets. I'm using .930 jackets.

Image

I weighed a half dozen and they came out to 18.8 grains.

I cut my core blanks at 62.6 grains, as I felt I cut them a little light last time. A swaged core weight 58.2 to 58.3 grains.

Image

Here I am seating the cores. Looking back, I suspect that I should have applied a 1/8th to a 1/4 turn more to the seating die.

Jackets with seated cores. Weight on average, 77.1 grains

First example.

So, I'd like to close up that open tip. I've some ideas on how best to do that, but first, the rest of the batch.
Image

You'll notice some serious problems. I've got more bullets with issues than I do that don't have them. I suspect the ribbing is caused by too much lube.
Image

The large tips with exposed lead, I suspect, are from too much lead for the jacket. I'm betting that in this 8S ogive die, .930 should have a max core weight of about 52.5 grains. Not the 58.2 I was using. In a little rounder of an ogive, I could run the heavier cores.
Image

Here is a decent bullet surrounded by ones that I suspect I put too much lube on, along with having too heavy of a core for the .930 jacket.
Image
Image

Three decent-looking bullets, far less lube was used. Two have smaller closed-up tips, while the center has a tip that is more open.
Image

A close-up of how the wider tips were forming.
Image

Observations from this batch of test bullets.
Their median weight after the lead was removed from the tip was 72 grains. That makes me think the max I should shoot for with these .930 jackets is 70 grains. I suspect that a 70 grain overall weight will allow me to close up those tips quite nicely without having lead spill out and keeping the tips from closing.

As far as the inconsistent ribbing, I think that is a matter of too much lube on the cases. I plan on cutting back and using less.

Any comments? Ideas and helpful hints would be appreciated.

Whelp. I've been given some advice, and after putting that advice to use, I've some much better samples.
0.930 jackets, and 58.2 grain lead core.

For those of you who swage. Sorry for the link to my post, but I don't have time today to make up a post for Fb, X, and various bulletin boards.
