Casting with the new brass mold

Post by Vaquero » Tue Feb 11, 2025 6:28 pm

Someone mentioned an update/follow along on this endeavor so, Saturday morning I fired up the pot.
While it was warming up I put the handles on and sat it on the pots edge to start warming it also.
I need to replace the hot plate that I had, much easier and not in the way. :D

Those bullets are some of the 325ish ones I had done a couple days before.
It took a couple trys before the mold was up to temp to get some good projectiles. Here are the second and third attempt, you can see in the second pic. that they are close.

Then they started dropping like hot cakes. ;)
I will say that this 4-cavity brass boy gets a little tiresome, especially since I've only use the double cavity molds in the past. ;) and the majority of those are the Lee aluminum ones. I manged around 100 to start with and while I was at it I did around 100 of the Lee 310s.

And if you're curious here's how they compare in shape.

I'll let them cure for a little while then I'll powder coat and size them.

I liked it quite well, once I got the newness broke in and the temp right.
It produced some fine looking bullets, they dropped easier than the steel Lyman.
The view I checked varied 357.8- 260.3.

Casting can be a workout. When I use to cast the big 540 grain bullets for the Sharps there was times I wasn’t sure this was fun. Probably the reason I haven’t started casting round balls again even though I have all the stuff

Looking good! It looks like the MP mold uses Lee 6 cavity handles? What diameter are they dropping at for you?

Thanks Forty.
I may try and powder coat some this afternoon.
I'm going to help my buddy Eric, his dad has a small water leak in a bathroom.
Hopefully it's not a major event.
