Egg Shortage

Post by JEBar » Mon Jan 27, 2025 12:21 pm

I just returned from a quick grocery run to Food Lion, our area's largest chain grocery store .... NOT AN EGG IN THE STORE .... I asked an employee they said the shortage is due to the Bird Flu .... this leaves me wondering, how wide spread is this shortage ??? .... how about in your area ???

Don't see a shortage here, but that might self regulating. A carton of 18 eggs is running close to $11.

The Avian Flu H5N1 is raging across the globe. It's a significant, if not primary, reason for the outrageous cost of an egg. Supply and demand at work.
NY Times wrote:Volatile egg prices have been a part of the grocery shopping experience partly because of inflation, but also because of an avian influenza, or bird flu, that made its way to the United States in 2022. That influenza, caused by the H5N1 virus, has infected or killed 136 million birds thus far.

Far larger than you would guess, we have had shortages and limits on purchases here in Aus for a couple of months due to bird flu.
I cant help but think the push for free range eggs has contributed, not hard to prevent wild birds entering a shed, nearly impossible with birds outside.

I usually shop at Aldi's. They have been almost five dollars a dozen with a limit of two for about a month. We don't eat that many, but this summer I may have to get chickens.

It's kind of touch and go here. I have not run out but have seen the store without eggs a couple of times.

About 50/50 here on availability. Some days there are plenty, but the next day the shelves are empty. Just have to be in the right place/store at the right time.
I eat a lot of eggs, so I stock up when I can.

They are trying to get the chickens to mask up but their beaks poke holes in them...

Sounds like a business opportunity, making billions of disposable chicken masks with little spring loaded doors so they can eat. ;)

To date there has been no shortage around here but I haven’t looked for a while. We’re planning on a big grocery shop in Thursday so I’ll look then. We don’t eat a lot of eggs and are always turning down eggs from my son who has more than a dozen chickens. Not sure if they are laying in these current cold temps but he hold me they laid all thru December which surprised him.

We are over in central SC for a couple days, I went with the daughter just a little bit ago to grab a few things.
We did grab an eighteen count, they had plenty.

I just got back from visiting the same Food Lion grocery store mentioned in Post 1 in this thread .... while there I made it a point to check the cooler where they stock eggs .... at some point between being there yesterday and today, they had restocked .... there were numerous boxes labeled to have had 15 dozen cartons of medium to Jumbo size eggs .... it was easy to see that they had already sold the vast majority of the eggs .... I'd be willing to bet that they will be sold out rather quickly .... I picked up a dozen Jumbos, haven't bought any this size in literally decades ....
