Leather wrap cause rust ?

Post by Oldbrass » Tue Jan 21, 2025 2:25 pm

Probably a dumb question cause I over think stuff but I'm Pondering leather wrapping the lever on a few shooters. Just curious if you need to remove it now and then for rust protection, any wrapping tips would be much abliged as well....OB

Consider para cord in lieu of leather and it is a moot question. Peace of mind is worth something.

I've had a leather lever wrap on my Henry 1860 for years, and checked it periodically; no rust. However, different story on brass. If you put a stock cover on, I use a layer of saran wrap under it to keep the leather off the brass.

For what it's worth, I stored a couple of my pistols in leather holsters for a short time until I read that it's not a good idea because leather attracts moisture. I no longer do that. I also have a folding Buck knife that was in a leather sheath for quite some time. It definitely had an effect on the patina of the brass.

markiver -

Buy some Brasso (is still in production?) or NEVR-DULL and either will remove the green crud where the bolster came into contact with the leather sheath. I do it to my Buck 110 a couple of times a year. Reminds me of brass polishing years ago in the military.

Great idea, never thought of that.

Rust require oxygen in addition to moisture. Wax the lever with this to stop both before you wrap it. I've used this wax for years on everything from guns to woodworking tools.
