Husk Matsato Chef Knives

Post by JEBar » Mon Jan 13, 2025 8:56 pm

I'm a huge fan of Japanese style chef knives .... if I do say so myself, over time I've assembled a pretty nice collection .... if you've paid much attention to YouTube or any number of similar sources, you have most probably seen glowing ads promoting Husk Matsato Chef Knives .... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CLVMXH3Y?re ... asin_title .... in so far as being a Japanese chef's knife it most certainly doesn't fit the mold .... Amazon and other online sources show they have sold thousands and have top customer rankings .... bottom line, they don't come close to living up their sales hype .... if you dig deeper, you will find a rapidly growing discontent with them .... in but one example they claim :"Sharp chef knife | The Matsato chef knife offers a premium crafted blade made out of stainless steel. This sharp knife will never dull or chip, ensuring you always have access to a sharp knife when you need it." .... the reality is, ours needed to be sharpened part way through slicing one large onion. ... the black etching (or whatever its supposed to be) on the sides of the blade grab and hold onto whatever is being cut .... very unsanitary .... the blade is too thick and will make a mess of carving a roast .... I went through the Amazon return process ... end result THEY IMMEDIATELY REFUNDED OUR FULL PURCHASE PRICE AND TOLD ME NOT TO BOTHER RETURNING THE KNIFE

I bought these knives a few years ago and love them.

I have the full set including separate butcher knives and an extra set of steak knives.

Jim, thank you for confirming what I was thinking. I have seen those knives all over the internet. I didn't think they were up to all the hype, but you never know till you try. I'm glad you didn't have to go through the hassle of returning it either. That says "junk" pretty loudly to me.

I found a half dozen new Rada paring knives at my parents house when I prepared it for sale. I like the qualities they have. One of them was being American made. I have purchased more Rada cutlery over the years. I just got this set for around sixty dollars. I was very happy with that purchase. They perform as I expected and stay sharp. I have yet to run them on the simple Rada sharpener that restores my Rada's to very sharp in seconds.

I have other knives in these configurations, but I like these the best.

I'm not familiar with that brand and appreciate the head's up about them.

Jim, I had seen Rada in an Amish store. I had no experience with them until I happened upon those paring knives at my parents. They are not expensive, come in aluminum or black plastic handles and sharpen up very easily on the Rada sharpener. I do not care for the serrated edge knives anyone makes. The Rada serrated are no exception to that rule. The regular edged knives never fail and are scary sharp. I also have regular and large veggie peelers, spatulas and granny forks. All winners. American made and a very good value for the price.

I have a few Rada knives. Not fancy but they get the job done. The one I use daily is what they call the heavy duty paring knife. It has about a 4 inch thin sharp pointed blade. Looks more like a small filet knife than a paring knife.
One thing to note do not put the aluminum handle ones in a dishwasher. I haven’t done it but know people who have. It doesn’t harm the knives but it turns the handles a very ugly shade of grey.
Load on Sunday and Shoot all Week.......okay it's a Mare's Leg I will reload on Wednesday. ;)

We also have a couple Rada knives and really like them. Especially the thin serrated tomato slicer. It works great1

I put the parking knives, veg peelers, spatula and forks in the dishwasher. I don't mind the color change at all. I do hand wash and dry the larger knives, just because they haven't made it to the dishwasher yet.........

Also, I saw another ad for the Matsato knife, slicing a tomato sideways with the thinnest of slices. I can actually do that with most of my Rada knives.
I also have other kitchen knives too. Ol'Hickory and Cutco, made in NY, some Buck and some Tromontia from Sams and Costco. They have survived and held a good edge so far. I also have a set of Buck Empress Trio and a full set of Buck Kitchen knives with Elk handles.

while the Chef Knife discussed above left much to be desired, I've found the Matsato Premium Leather Sheath they offer to be well made and of a good design .. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D1FNV7KX?re ... asin_title .. I now have 2 of them and one more on the way .... at bottom of the first picture below you can see our Matsato Japanese chef's knife .... above it are two of our good Japanese Chef's Knives with a different shape than the Matsato .... we were pleased to see that in spite of the different shapes, they both fit nicely .... that can be seen in the second picture

Well, who would have thought. I'm glad to see and hear that you have nice sheaths for your other, nice, knives.
