Thermometers, hygrometers, and barometers
I just bought another thermometer and realized I’m getting a small collection of them. I’ll start with the most fundamental ones. I have two of these. One in the house and this one in the shop. The inside temp reading only goes down to 32.
This is one of three thermostats in the house.
The next two are old fashioned mercury tubes hanging in the shop.
This one is in the motor home.
The rest are in the house. I have more thermometers than rooms.
I look at this one the most as it’s in the kitchen window over the sink.
This one is on the kitchen window sill (hence the low temp) and also has sensors in the garage, upstairs and motor home.
The newest one will go in the bathroom.

Gene, I like those. Over the years I have tried to buy some working models at thrift stores and on eBay. The creme colored one in the picture with the jig saw puzzles is neat. I had one that worked and looked like that one, except being dark brown.
Cool collection.
Cool collection.

Those are very retro cool. Love 'em.

Any more I just ask “Alexa what’s the temperature?”

Alexa gives me the weather 15 miles away and 500 lower in elevation.

I only have one in the RV. Just use the cell phone most of the time.

Re: Thermometers, hygrometers, and barometers
We've now got a few of these around the house too. There is a sensor on the east side of the house that works with two different displays, one in the kitchen and one in the living room. The sensor on the west side of the house is displayed on the unit in the bedroom. I also have three digital clock with temperature displays in the basement, you can see at least one from anywhere you stand down there.
It must be something that piques our interest as we get a bit older, since I've had conversations about these weather station things at work, and interest does seem to increase with age.
I've also made these weather station displays gifts to my kids a couple Christmases ago. Doesn't seem like too exciting of a gift, but everyone looks at them at least once or twice every day, and you appreciate them more and more as time goes by.
Way back when I worked in Pharma Development, one of our labs had a big wall-mounted instrument for barometric pressure, and a big case with a sling hygrometer. There had to be a few ounces of mercury in these things, and this was when we still had lots of other thermometers and McLeod gauges that used mercury. Modern instruments have the adjustments for these factors built in, so even back then we never really used them, aside from the McLeod gauges. Those we used daily. A few older guys said that those older instruments would be pretty valuable as antiques, but they were there for as long as I was there.

Re: Thermometers, hygrometers, and barometers
We've had a few like these in the past. Once the novelty wore off we lost interest in them. We still have a regular thermometer on the back deck. When we want to know more about the weather outdoors we look out the window.
If there is a severe weather warning, Alexa will let us know.

Did any of you start humming the Gordon Lightfoot song when you saw the Gitche Gumee thermometer?
