Single shot 44 mag.
Single shot 44 mag.
Any body have any accurate loads. I've tried 200 grain and the 240's by Hornady and they are not very accurate. Thinking of trying 300grain.
any thoughts?

Re: Single shot 44 mag.
For full power 240 XTP's a load of 23 to 24 grains of W296 or H110 has always worked for me. For slightly less than full power try 2400 or HS6. For light loads you just can't beat 8 to 9 grains of Unique. Of course, you need to verify everything you read in a good reloading manual.
Re: Single shot 44 mag.
Thanks 5shot
I've tried a few different loads but can't seem to get good groups.

Re: Single shot 44 mag.
Is your 44 a newer model with the 1 in 20 twist or the older 1 in 16.

Re: Single shot 44 mag.
It is a 1:20 twist.
When I got it ammo was hard to get so I picked up some off brand stuff 200gr. And then some Winchester 240gr. Sp
But I have a bunch of reloads for my 71/2”RedHawk that shoots well out of that.

Re: Single shot 44 mag.
Like 5shot mentioned above the Hornady 240 XTP and Win 296 have worked well for me. I didn’t have a Henry 44 mag but in my Marlin 44 mag this combination was very accurate.
Re: Single shot 44 mag.
Its a rare occasion when loads that have worked in a revolver will also be as accurate in another gun. Believe me I have tried endless times to get this to work and once in a while it does work but not very often. If your gun is throwing factory ammo in large groups like PJM mentioned call Henry. There has been several issues with 44 mag barrels on this website. If asked though a mention of it not shooting reloads very well will probably get a different result than a mention of it not doing well with factory ammo.

Re: Single shot 44 mag.
200 and 240gr bullets are not accurate? How many powders have you tried? How many different charge weights? How many primers? How many different lengths? How much have you varied the crimp?
To just make a blanket statement that theyre not very accurate is going a little far. Im not saying its not possible, some guns simply wont like one bullet or another but Ive found Hornadys to be pretty good overall. There are so many variables that can go into a load that the list can be overwhelming.
The most accurate bullet Ive found for my BB is a cheap 240gr sjfp from Zero with 19.5gr of A9 and at 100yds (with a peep) I can make cloverleaf groups with regularity.
And as Im sure you know, every bore is different...
