Youtube Wizards

Post by HenryFan » Mon Nov 11, 2024 5:01 pm

Earlier today, I was doing end-of-the-year service on my Husqvarna riding mower and could not remember where all the zerk fittings were located. I went to the internet and looked at two or three how-to clips.

My questions were answered but.....

I am frequently amused by folks who post videos who have at best, a very basic knowledge of the subject they are covering. Unfortunately, some do not have basic knowledge but post anyway.

I speculate they don't know what they don't know but they have a need to impress with the knowledge they do have. Such as it is.

I know my limitations (too numerous to detail in this thread) and for that reason, you won't see me post a Youtube clip.

Unless it is about eating black cherry ice cream. I am exceptionally good at that. Lots of practice.

I've noticed that too. And they should have searched first to see if what they are posting has already been covered by someone else that knows what they are doing.

That's why when I watch youtube videos to see HOW to do something, I either watch the videos posted by the COMPANY that makes the product... like Henry produced HOW TO videos, or watch three or four videos on the same subject to learn how to do the same thing to pick up a full picture of the way you want to do it. Combine the three or four and you might have a good idea. Sometimes you realize one poster is a real idgit and just throw out that content.

I don't post on YouTube or the other video channels. I might post a build along woodworking or knifemaking post on one of the two or three forums I belong to, but I caution those following along, that I am NOT a professional... I'm an amateur and I learned like others, from watching others. Take the things I post with a grain (Teaspoon?) of salt. LOL.

Me, too. I laugh at the How-To YouTube videos that contain errors or mistakes while recording that are corrected with post-production notations on the screen... like, "Oops. That should be...", then post them anyway.

I really dislike people that think they know it all because it makes it bad for those of us that really do know it all.

I'm not young enough to know it all. I think that ship has sailed in my case.

Occasionally, a YouTube Wizard will shoot a how-to video that is worse than just incorrect, occasionally, it is bizarre.

Hopefully, they are not health care providers.

There are some videos that show procedures that are actually dangerous. I take the time to click on the report icon and let them know why those are dangerous. Sometimes YouTube takes them down, sometimes they don't.

I use Youtube quite a bit when trying to disassemble or make a repair to something new to me and search thru them to find one with best clarity on item being shown. There are many videos on there but have yet to find one that shows how to reset the time on my wife's so called Smart Watch!
I told her to buy another one like it now and it would be in Standard time and her present one now stuck in Daylight Savings Time she could wear next Spring! :D
