Local Wild Animals and Birds
I see animals out in the fields and sometimes near the house and really enjoy seeing them. Occasionally like this morning I take pictures. This picture was taken when it was very dark because the deer hide in the trees in daylight. Especially this time of year.
The rest of these were taken in the last two and a half years.

Great pics Gene. That fox on your berm looks like a target stand. Gotta love that four legged feline you caught in your home.
The coyote in the frost sure looks healthy.
Re: Local Wild Animals and Birds
Nice pics, and that kind of variety makes it possible to spot something on any day.
What are the big, long leg birds? They have a beak like a heron, but I don't see water. Are those Sandhill Cranes?

That is a nice variety of animal life. It makes it nice to look at.
We seem to have more coyote and hawks than we need. They are eating most of the grouse, pheasant, quail, etc.
Keep the wildlife photographs coming.

Great work, Gene. The wildlife up here is amazing, isn't it? It's one of the reasons we retired up here.
Yes, those are Sandhill Cranes. We are neighbors to Gene and we had a pair of Sandhills nesting on our lake this summer.

Yes it is amazing Joanie. I see something almost everyday. I’ve been hearing coyotes at night every night for a few weeks. I get up early as that’s the best time to see wildlife.North Country Gal wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 11:16 amGreat work, Gene. The wildlife up here is amazing, isn't it? On our trike ride today, we saw turkeys, grouse, deer, and a red fox. Very cool.
Re: Local Wild Animals and Birds
I’ve heard reports of of Sandhill Crane sightings a few counties north of me here in central Ohio.

Re: Local Wild Animals and Birds
I saw this eagle by the side of the road eating a coyote. It wasn’t scared at all and I stopped to take a picture out the car window about ten feet away.
I see them flying almost daily but never get a chance to get this close. They are huge!

Great shot Gene.
Yes, they are big when you actually get close.

Cool pic. Yes, a lot of animals don't equate cars with humans, so you can sometimes get very close.

Re: Local Wild Animals and Birds
Years past when I was doing some landscaping here and I had a pile of black dirt about 400 yards down the driveway through the woods I would use my tractor with the bucket to haul dirt in and then spread it. One day I notice a pair of fawns parked right behind my dirt pile. They'd stand up and look at me but never run away. (I think Ma said stay here), and then about 4 or 5 in the afternoon the doe would come get them.
The next day they were back and for several days after that.
I decided that the doe was using me as a baby sitter. She wasn't afraid of the tractor and sometimes I would have to get off and shoo her out of the way. Then she saw a human and would run. The tractor was just a tractor.

It’s still quite dark and I can barely see the deer in my field. By full daylight they will be hidden in the woods.

Re: Local Wild Animals and Birds
These sandhill cranes have been hanging out at my place for the fourth summer. They are really getting used to me and they don’t run away when I walk by. I did a range report earlier and ran them off before I shot.

I can attest to that. This was in Alaska two years ago.

Re: Local Wild Animals and Birds
The sandhill cranes are back after not being seen for two days. Someone should tell them not to walk on the range.
They hang close to the house a lot. .
All these pictures were taken from inside the house and this isn’t a telephoto shot. It was literally ten feet away.

A neighbors caught this on his game camera last night. He has a dozen or so cameras on 40 acres and is always catching something.

Re: Local Wild Animals and Birds
I’ve been having single birds show up squawking for a mate and now I finally have a pair. I’m hoping they stay and nest in the pond.
