Marlin/Ruger 1894 in 357

One feature I wasnt aware of is the ability to unload via the loading gate on the new rifle.
Depressing the loading gate releases one round at a time.
Guess it would save having to cycle every round through the action to unload.

It's not bad, I'd rather have a blued version with nice walnut furniture though.

Yup Ive seen them but when you look at that and the Smith they are very similar in looks.

The S&W action looks like a Marlin 336. Not that it's a bad thing, but I have always preferred the sleeker and trimmer look of the Marlin 1894 action. Just a personal preference.

The other thing is that I am totally familiar with the Marlin 1894 action. It's one I know and trust, having owned 1894s in 357, 44 mag and 45 Colt. If I have to spend 1K, I'll stick with something I know. The S&W is way too new and unproven for me to spend that kind of money.

I had one of my LGS put me on their wait list for a Ruger/Marlin in 30-30. I got a call after three weeks from them. So, I went down to look at it. It was the 336 Classic and had a price tag of $1,140 on it. Beautiful rich brown wood and perfect wood to metal fit. I was able to get them to throw in a $25 box of ammo for free. Now… I have 4 Henry’s, 1 Rem/Marlin, and 1 Ruger/Marlin.

I took another look at the Ruger Marlin 357 at our LGS this week. Love the bluing and the wood to metal fit and the nice wood. I think the bluing and polishing is actually better than any of the original Marlins I've owned.

I was very tempted, but that trigger pull, though crisp, had to be at least 5 pounds, maybe more. No thanks. Oh, I could probably play with springs and I've done that before on Marlins, but I am getting sick and tired of paying for new guns and having to improve them when I get them home, especially when the price is one grand.

I seen one today. It looked nice, so I picked it up and pulled the trigger. It did not seem much different than the one that I have (Remington/Marlin). Therefore, I gave it back. I couldn't see myself paying twice as much ($1,200) for something that was not much different than what I have. In the end, they both go BANG, hopefully.

I couldnt agree more with this comment. Exactly how I feel about a Ruger GP-100 22 and a Smith and Wesson 617. Ive spent extra on both making them like they should be to begin with.

Yeah, I'm at the point where I really have a hard time trusting any big name, mainline brand enough to buy new, anymore, at least as far as revolvers.

I think that Ruger missed a chance when they took over Marlin to put in a transfer bar like H.R.A. and get rid of that crossbolt " safety".

I think the demand for semi-auto pistols has degraded the revolver quality among the major gun companies.

I agree. Autoloaders have been top dog in the shooting world for a long time, now, plus autos are much better suited to modern manufacturing methods than revolvers. It's been that way dating back to the 90s.
