Our Morning Coffee and Weather

I have a little more time now to relate some things from yesterday and Tuesday.

I had noticed that the rains had produced a bountiful crop of mushrooms. Now I am very careful about consuming mushrooms. I only pick what I know are absolutely safe, like Morels, Puff Balls, ect. (I found a Puff Ball last Oct that was bigger than a football and delicious as well).

I spied some bright Apricot mushrooms that I suspected were Chanterelles so I went online and did some research. There are two mushrooms that are that color, Chanterelles and False Chanterelles which are also called False Jack O Lanterns. Those false ones will make you sick! I went out and battled the mosquitoes and picked quite a lot of the Chanterelles and brought them in. Carol used some in Fajitas that evening and dried the rest in the oven and stored them for later.
If you do this, just be very careful!
Chanterelles only grow out of decomposed leaves while the false ones grow only out of rotting wood. I found some of both.

I had noticed that there were plants growing from the gutters on my shop roof so I was determined to get them cleaned out. Yesterday I put the ladder up and once on the roof saw there were patches of green moss growing on the shingles as well, so I got my broom and a hoe and went back up. It was early morning and it was due to be a really hot one so I wanted to get it done before it heated up. The humidity was already 100%, but I got it done. Good thing because we got over an inch of rain last night and more today.

Then in early afternoon I had a Doctor's appointment where he cautioned me not to climb ladders at my age. If he only knew the whole story.

Later on we had beer and wings with the gun club friends and got home just in time for my ride the the American Legion meeting for which I am an officer. See, I won't drink a few beers and drive anywhere in the city so I had a ride.

Finally got home about ten last evening where Carol was waiting with a Martini.

It was a long but productive day.

Like I said, be very careful what you consume. Do the research and be absolutely certain. Some of those things will kill you.

A very warm 63 when I got up an hour ago and I can feel the heat here in the house. Today is the hottest day of this heat spell with a forecast temp in Spokane of 104. This will set a new all time record for the day if it happens. 101 or so here at home. No outdoor plans for today. We have slat style blinds and man are they dust collectors. So today we’ll stay indoors and I’ll pull the slats out of the rigging and and them off to my wife who will clean them and hand them back. We’ve done this before and it works great.

I got up early before it got too hot and did some work on the pasture electric fence. Buster goat climbed over the fence (I had the electric turned off for some maintenance) the day before yesterday and ate quite a few of my friend's berries, some green apples and did some sampling in her garden. She was not at all happy but I told her she probably planted the raspberries too close to the fence, can't blame Buster, once he got a few berries he was determined to get more. They're pretty much ruled by their stomach, my friend has a friend that comes by often and usually gives Buster and Leia apples or other treats and they know the sound of her SUV, they get excited as soon as they hear it.

Two more hot days and then it cools down for our trip. First we will be
in Duluth by the lift bridge for three days and then after a stop at home
we will be at a Blue Grass Festival. The weather looks to be fantastic.
Today we will get packed and I need to take the Winnebago to town and
diesel up and get propane as well. Can't forget the DEF.

Woke up to a very warm 67. Had a cloud cover come in overnight which kept the temp up. House is warm as it was too hot to open windows when we went to bed and neither of us woke up during the night to open them up. Now every window is open and the ceiling fan is creating a nice breeze. Life is good. Hot again today with triple digits once more.

Only absolute plan for today is to go out early and get my tractor loaded up on the trailer. Taking it to my son’s place tomorrow to fill in a ditch he dug to extend water to his barn. Gonna be hot again tomorrow so we are planning an early start.

63 would feel cool and chilly now... in thevwinter it would feel warm and wonderful... our bodies adapt... some.... oh well... a blistering week of hot days here they say, but that's typical august weather. That's one reason august is one of my least favorite months. Too hot, too many ticks and seed ticks and chiggers.... etc etc..... come on and get here early october!!!!

69 this morning and it sure feels warm in the house. All windows are open and fans are spinning. Still seems warm. We have an overcast keeping the temps up overnight. High is supposed to be around 90. Yesterday the overcast and smoke kept the high way below the forecast of 100. Thanks for that! Heading over to my son’s place in a while to do some backfilling of a ditch he dug for a water line.

Well, as it turned out it wasn't Carol who determined our leave time.
It was her cat which hates the RV and as soon as she figured out what was
transpiring, promptly hid. It took us half an hour to find her and drag her into the
RV but we still got on the road by ten anyway.

62 this morning, light clouds and smoke keeping the overnight temps up. We should be in the 50’s. Highs all week will be in the 90’s. Maybe a thunderstorm today and we are under a red flag warning for lightning. Yesterday we got maybe .1 of an inch of rain, that was very welcome.

Went to my son’s place yesterday to fill in the ditch he dug. Here’s a before and after pic. Needless to say his wife was happy with the results after living with that open ditch for a couple of weeks.

I have to close the bedroom door before I get the cat carrier out or I'll have a heck of a time catching Callie for a trip to the vet and then she will meow all the way there. Leroy thinks it's no big deal, the techs and the vets say he is the calmest cat they ever see.

As a cat owner I can relate. Our Bodhi seems to have a sixth sense. Whether we are preparing to take him to the vet or just getting ready to take him with us in the vehicle he knows ahead of time and tries to vanish. He hates travel.

How do you keep the cat from escaping from the RV when you are on the road?

Strangely, once she's in the RV she settles down and never tries to escape.

A tad bit cooler this morning at 60 with a high in the low 90’s. Yesterday’s forecast for thunderstorms did happen but stayed south of us. No reports of new wildfires so far, fingers crossed. Sunny and hot all week. Today’s is Mrs. Hatchdog’s birthday so today’s plans will be centered around her. Something tells me there may be some shopping in my near future. Ugh!
