Australia is off to a great start.
Yes but we usually do with swimming beginning early in the games, I expect we should win 10-20 gold medals around 50 medals total and end the games 5th- 10th on the medal tally. You have to go back to the 1980s to find the last time were were not in the top 10.

What are your thoughts on the Canadian drone drama?
I thought the 6 point deduction big fine and 3 coaches being banned for 12 months was a bit harsh.

I only read a little bit about that.

The six point deduction is harsh and pretty much means that they won’t advance out of the group.

Now, if the IOC really wanted to get serious, they should have done something about China’s doping in the last Olympics that they blamed on the food at the hotel.

We all know that was a crock, But it’s easier to go after Canada than it is to go after China.

I used to really enjoy watching both Olympics even when the USSR was doping all their athletes. Not that the IOC has become so political I won’t watch anymore. Not that I don’t support all the competitors especially the USA folks. So sad that this event which these athletes work so hard for has become un-watachable. Oh also when USA started entering pro athletes (I know, only way to compete with some of the other countries) that took some of the sport out of it too.

I am not overly worried about if a sport is professional or amateur I think the criteria for inclusion in the Olympics should be that an Olympic medal is viewed as the pinnacle of achievement in a sport.

With the shooting events I would love to see mens and womens events scraped and everything shot as mixed events.
Shooting is one of the few sports where both sexes can compete on an equal footing and mixed events would allow for an expansion in the number of different matches shot.
If you look at the air pistol results a mixed event would have resulted in 3 women and 5 men qualifying for the final. The women would have actually finished 1st 2nd & 3rd in the final.

I do enjoy watching the gymnastics. Simone Biles is such an incredible athlete, she injured her calf last night and still did the world's most difficult vault tonight, no one else has even attempted it. Her second vault was the world's second most difficult. She's almost assured to win gold in the vault, floor exercise and all around and lead the USA gymnasts to win team gold.

I'm enjoying the broadcasts, but switch to some other stations for different events. I watched a little badminton last night, and have seen some rowing, water polo, mountain biking, equestrian cross-country, and table tennis, in addition to the basketball, swimming, and gymnastics. The big network keeps doing these short individual background stories on the big name athletes, and while that is kind of interesting, maybe some of that time could be used to show some shooting, or archery, or some of the other events. Guess we need Nike to make shoes for those sports, then they'll get air time.
It seems that the preponderance of events that make it to broadcast are those that have judges decide the finish order. At least so far since track & field hasn't started yet. I like when the events are less subjective. If you run the fastest, jump the highest, or farthest, or throw something farther, you win, no matter what you look like doing it.

Here in Aus I have been watching it with our free to air broadcasters app. They have 3 or 4 channels showing various sports but the app has just about everything available. I am yet to find any of the shooting qualification rounds shown but every final has been available to watch live.
Aus women basketball lost to Nigeria, would have been an interesting match for friends daughter, one of her team mates at University of Kentucky was on the Nigerian team and as a 16/17yo she played a couple of seasons in our local league against many of the Aus players. She had 3 times WNBA MVP and hall of fame inductee Lauren Jackson as a team mate. Jackson is playing her 5th Olympics at 43yo having made a comeback after retiring nearly a decade ago.
Swimming finals are underway Aus should pick up another gold in the womens 200m, we have the 2 fastest women in history swimming but you just never know at the Olympics and that is part of the attraction,

Gold and silver in the womens 200m puts Aus back to 3rd on the medal tally at the end of day 3, one gold behind China in the lead.
Our best medal chances tomorrow will again be in the pool, womens rugby 7s and shooting, aussie is leading the trap after 3 qualification rounds.
