Remington 700 .270

Post by bandit1250 » Tue Nov 22, 2016 7:13 am

My wife bought a 700 ADL last summer in .270 Win. I never fooled with it at all except adjust the trigger pull. I got it out of the safe last evening and put Weaver bases on it and a 3x9x40 Nikon on to get it ready for deer season next week. I put the front base on turned around backwards to get the scope back closer so it fits with hunting clothes on with out cutting the stock. She won't go hunting any way so I will use it and load the 110gr. Sierra that I always used here for our deer in other .270's I have owned. She bought it because it was a steal at $275 from a local pawn shop. I can't believe people sell rifles like this to pawn shops for such low prices they give them for one. Here is the rifle.

I well remember when 700's were on of the most accurate out of the box production rifles .... we were fortunate enough to purchase a 300 WBY and 30-06 .... still have them and they are still dead on .... any clue when the 270 was manufactured ? ... it should serve you guys well

The code on the barrel is DQ which could be 1978 or 1996. I would say '96 would be right for this rifle due to the type of checkering and it does not have the riveted extractor in the bolt that was fazed out about 1982. So it looks like it is a September 1996 and Remington's were still good shooters at that time. I may get to fire a few rounds through it today or tomorrow.

Can you give us a close up picture of the scope mounts?

Sir Henry the mounts are just standard Weaver for cross bolt style rings. The front base is for the Remington short action to get a wider ring spacing so I just use that base on the front of the long action deer rifles to move the scope back so as not to have to shorten the stock. The front base for the 700 Rem. is a #35 and the rear is a #36. The way the rifle is set up on the picture is a #40A front and the same #36 you would normally use on the 700 on the rear. Savage is another rifle I have swapped the front to move the scope back and it uses a #402. I just hate cutting off a stock if I can avoid it. Here is a picture with the standard #35 laying beside the #40A on the side of the action and it sets the scope back appr. 3/4".
