Finally bought a lever action

New here. I've been wanting a lever gun ever since I was a kid in the fifties watching cowboy shows. Yesterday I visited my LGS and left with a used very nice Big Boy Steel in .357. The action is so smooth! Tomorrow I plan to go to the range and try it out. Going to have to do something with the sights due to my 70+ year old eyes! Probably will go the scope route.

I had the steel .357 Big Boy, but had to let it go. That was a "sad event" for me. You are absolutely right on how butter-smooth the lever action is. And you'll find out how accurate a shooter it is when you hit the range. Enjoy, and glad you joined us.

I have a set of elder eyes, and I put a Skinner peep sight on my .357. They work great; at least as an interim before a scope set up. I shoot well with that type of iron sight, and enjoy it. You might want to check them out at the "Skinner Sights" link at the top right in our banner page.

I've said it before, the only real problem I have had with my BIg Boy Steel in .357 magnum is loading enough ammo to keep Clovispup happy. I will shoot about 15 or 20 and ask if she wants to shoot "The Henry". Next thing I know, the rest of the ammo is gone, and she has a big smile on her face.

She does shoot the H001 while waiting for the Big Boy barrel to cool.

I do occasionally sneak the BB out of the house to go hunting.

As far as the sights, lots of folks like peep sights on the Henry. I've looked through a few and liked them. I ended up putting a holographic red dot on mine. I had it siting around unused. I will be picking up a nice 3x-9x scope in the near future. Having a hard time deciding between the Nikon and the Vortex.

I finally got to shoot it today and goot a 6 "3 shoot group at 50 yards. I know not great but this is without being able to clearly see the sights.

I looked at the Skinner peep sight and I may go that route.

I have been actively looking for a lever action in .357 for around 3 years. This was the only one I've come across so after a quick inspection I took it home.

Skinners sight's are really tough to beat. JHMO though. And then you add the Merit adjustable Aperture and you have the bomb!! I have the Skinner on my BB Brass, I did have to change the front sight. My 45-70 is the older version with the rear XS sight. I replaced the stock stem with a threaded one (got the ideal from another member here several years ago) and put the Merit aperture on it too. I love it too.

This is a 50 yard target, 3 shots that look like two:



The black target is at 100 yards while I was sighting it in. Ignore a lot of the holes. The four towards the center of the black was my last group. it was actually 5 shots. I managed to get a 2 in one hole there too.



These were shot bench rest with hand loads.The rounds were Hornady 225FTX Leverevolution in modified (shortened) Winchester brass and 19.3gn's Lil'Gun powder. My favoritevgo to 44mag lever gun round so far.

Excellent! You just sold me on the Skinner sight! It fits the style of rifle much better than a scope and looks to be about as accurate.

I'll get back with a report on how it works out in about a month. Got to get past a knee replacement scheduled for next week.
