Around here you might wait a year just to get on a schedule with a builder. It’s crazy nuts right now for contractors. Hope that’s not the case for you.

Microsoft is in the process of building 3 new data centers near here. I don't know about general contractors but electricians will be hard to get for awhile. Last time we had several data centers being built electricians could work as many hours as they wanted.

Yahoo moved a data center out of a leased Port building and to give you an idea of the amount of the electrical infrastructure of a data center they had to remove 260,000 pounds of stripped bare copper wire and 150,000 pounds worth of batteries.

We are a popular area for data centers due to our low power rates.

I met with a contractor neighbor and got a rough estimate. It’s on the high end of what I want in a 30x90 foot building with 16 foot ceilings and a loft.

The big question is whether he has the time this summer to do such a project. His family has been here for about 150 years and everyone says he is a good builder and treats people fair.

I received a verbal quote for just the foundation and it was $50K. It would have a 12 foot rise from the ground and would need to be 6 feet under ground. That’s a 90 foot wall 18 feet high! Needless to say I scaled back to 60 feet and brought it 20 feet closer to the house. It’s still going to be 30 feet wide.

I’m hoping to get the concrete work done for $20K. After that the building cost would be normal.

I scaled the size back to 60’ (was 90) and will build it 20 feet closer to the house. That will reduce the wall height. I’m also thinking of lowering the door opening and ceiling of 14 and 16 feet respectively to an 8 and 10 foot height. I really don’t need anything bigger.

Both the concrete and stick builder have put me on this summers schedule. The inside of the building might not be finished but the outside will be and it will keep my equipment out of the harsh Wisconsin winter.

I will insulate the detached three car garage so only one car is in it and the rest will be a shop. This makes a lot more sense because it’s closer to the house yet not blocking the view.

I’m giving it a lot of thought about building placement and height so I don’t block my morning winter sunrise.

The view from my front window looking SE where the winter sun would rise. At the most southern point it would rise about where the right of the motor home is. Since the building will be another 30 feet away I don’t think it will block the top of the trees.

This shot is from the 90 foot corner and you can see, or should I say can’t see the house or motor home. That’s why I shortened the building. This wall would need to be 12 feet high plus another six under ground. As it is the concrete would will be a third of the cost.

Good idea, I have done the same thing putting an overhead door on one end so I can either drive or roll stuff in. I bet even one of those especially if a gravel foundation needs to be installed will require a wait. At lease around here it’s several weeks to get one delivered. Good luck!

I’m told it’s a 3 to 5 week wait. Most of the gravel I need is down. I might order another truck load just to make it level and raise it above grade a tad.

As far as the big garage the contractor isn’t giving me a blueprint because he doesn’t think it’s all that complicated. It really isn’t but when he tells me the wall is going to be a foot thick I want it to be a full 12” and not 10 1/2” and say it’s close enough. I also want a bill of materials.

I was hit with a $60K estimate for just the concrete work. I think the guy thought I was an idiot. The big problem is he is the only guy in town.

Instead of building this year I’m going to wait a year or two. In the meantime my RV needs protection so I’m buying a metal RV carport just big enough for it with the slides out. I’ll have vertical lines on the roof and sides so from the road it will look more like a wood garage. The sides will have a vertical wall coming down two feet from the roof and up four feet from the ground with a five feet opening to enjoy the view from inside. The center will be about center of where it’s parked now and shifted to the right.

This is directly behind the RV and I will bury a 50 amp line to the inside of the carport. The main tower has a 20 amp plug-in and the wood post is 30 amps.

Gene, I have a Versatube carport that I park my truck camper under. Go to their site and plug in the information and design your building. Make sure you have the proper snow load information for your address.

I turned a similar carport into a garage. Wish I had made it a little bigger both ways but wider would have made the carport quite a bit more expensive and required a lot more work earth moving with the equipment I had. Couldn't go deeper without being on top of my septic tank and going any further the other way would have gone over the county's set back requirement. I don't often have a passenger and if I do they have to get in after I pull out.

I built it back in 2006 and my total cost was around $6000.
