I walked out to the carcass while a few of the lessers birds were feeding. They flew away.

What do Ya think led to its demise ? ..the Coyotes?

The picture of the coyote was identified as a coywolf by a neighbor and it brought down the deer.

If it is a crossbreed that sure explains the large size of it. Your pics of the feeding pecking order are awesome.

I thought it looked large for a coyote in the first photo. Apparently wolves and coyotes can mate.

I know they can breed with dogs, a friend of mine had what he swore was a German Shepard/wolf mix but it wasn't any bigger than a standard German Shepard. Long ago we had an assembly where someone had brought in a domesticated wolf (don't remember the breed) and it was huge, a lot bigger than I had thought they would be from photos and videos I had seen of them.

Thanks Dave, the pictures taken with my cell phone aren’t all that great especially compared to the Nikon setup specific to the scope. I took the Hikon off because for just viewing the standard eyepiece is much better.

Yes, but they usually don’t have that much mottled white plumage. Not wanting to argue birds with a “Cooperhawk”, but I don’t think it’s a bald.

I found a dead doe a couple of weeks ago. It had fallen off a cliff (chased?) and the buzzards were at it. It’s sad to see them dead, but good to see nature looking after itself. We have so many deer get hit on the highway here it makes me sick. Lots of out of area tourists speeding, combined with truck traffic and they get hammered regularly. We have quite a few that frequent our property, including one my wife has named Annabelle who actually comes over when she is called! We try to keep the antlers of her past suitors hidden from view so she doesn’t hate me

We who live along the CT River Estuary are lucky to have a large population of Bald Eagles. I've taken photos of them here starting in 1992. Even so, it's always a (modern day) privilege to see them.

Having seen the eagle up close through the scope for several minutes I agree it’s a young bald. It looks just like the picture.

When I worked at the big ranch years ago, grizzlies would stalk the cattle herd from a long ways off and wait for the wolves to do all the work on a yearling. Then wander down and highjack the kill. Size matters.

That’s interesting. We have a large bald eagle population near my old home, and saw juveniles almost daily for years, and I don’t recall ever seeing one with so much white on it. There are obviously regional differences in any animal population, so our northwest birds might have distinctly different coloring than eastern birds.

I’ve noticed a big difference in coyotes between Washington and Wisconsin. I’m told they are mostly coywolves here.

Is that info coming from any official source, or just Hunter/farmer anecdotal information? Often the Hunter/farmer types know more about what’s going on than govt bios, but that’s another can of worms.

Both. It was first reported by locals and then they started testing DNA. The first time I saw one I thought it looked like a wolf yet acted like a coyote. Most locals call them coyotes.

Egads! What irony. I haven't seen a coyote in months and on the way to church this AM one was just sitting by
the gravel road. I thought at first it must be some farmer's dog, but boy did it look like a wolf. I wish I had a
picture of it.
Dogs aren't allowed to roam around here because a few years back a pack of dogs killed some
riding horses just for fun. If dogs are seen on the loose now they can be shot. Besides, this thing looked just
like a wolf!
