Range Report For A .30-06

[Deadwood Dutch]

It was pleasant here in Franklin County today, a bit breezy with 15mph wind but a lovely 59 degrees. I had not shot this for a long time at the range, maybe 4 years? The Remington 760 Gamemaster .30-06, made in 1970, has been a good old deerslayer through the years. It dumps 'em quick. I try to use the iron sights with the see-through as much as I possibly can use them. But, today, with the old Armsport scope set at 4 power, which is where I leave it for woods shooting, I shot 9 rounds of Remington Corelokt 180 grain at 50 yards. I don't reload. I very seldom get a shot over that and if I shoot further, it should be good to go even at 100 yards. Experience has led me to believe this. I was shooting from a rest and I am shaky, holding my breath and all. Is it because I am 71 or something else? I did bring the point of impact down a bit and called it quits. For me anyway, for a deer, I'll take it. Some of my shots at deer are up close and personal, let alone at 50 yards. But as I remarked in another post, through the years, the deer just aren't there in that neck of the woods like they used to be. I am just glad that I can get out to that favorite corner of the woods and enjoy the surroundings. The magazine is not the oringinal, the one that came with it was flattened by a tractor in the barnyard where I lost it a few years back. The new one is rather tight in fit. Funny thing is, I still haven't decided if I want to take this or one of the .44 magnums, the Monday after Thanksgiving. Since the leaves are changing I thought that I would take a couple of the range. The mountain is rather pretty.

I really think that checkering on your 760 stock and forearm is excellently crafted, and looks great on that 46-year-old beautiful wood!!

Ah, not least, the hills are alive with the look of fall colors! Perfect spot for a range.

What a beautiful place to shoot. You guys that live up north are so lucky.........

So I love my Winchester, and we all love our Henrys, but that Remington is probably the perfect deer rifle, at least in anything but thick brush.

Very nice deer rifle in a really popular caliber in our area of the country. Looks like a nice shooting range. Very nice pictures also.The Remington Model 760 is one of the most popular deer rifles in the Pa. deer and bear woods. I still see Remington Model 14 and 141 rifles occasionally still being used especially in 35 Remington but not to the extent of the 760-7600 rifles. I would love to find a 760 in 35 Remington and I always look for one at a show or LGS. Good luck this season Dutch and be safe.

Thank you all, my shoulder was beginning to hurt a bit after the nine rounds so that was another incentive for me to call it quits. I suppose I could have tried to adjust the scope more to the right but I didn't. It wasn't cold enough to wear a heavier jacket and I only had on a T- shirt and a light flannel shirt. I even use one of those shotgun pads for the shoulder but it doesn't really seem to help that much. I just stuck the target up on the back of the bench for the photo, didn't want to walk out on the range and interfere with the other two guys who were shooting there.
