Turkey Season 2023

Post by Stray Cat » Mon Mar 13, 2023 11:19 pm

It has been many years since I hunted spring turkeys. I'm trying to get ready for an April or May hunt. I'd be interested to hear what your preference is for a box or slate call(s). There are so many available my eyes get glazed over. I'd also be interested in what your ammo and gun preferences are. I'm going to try the 3" Winchester Longbeard XR, a Carlson turkey choke, with a Browning Maxus 2.

Really looking forward to getting up real early and listening to the timber come to life. Just hope my body wakes up the same time I do...I don't want to ruin another pair of socks!

It's been years since I last hunted them. If I decide to go, it'll be with the ole BPS. It has a turkey choke already to go, I still have some ammo suitable for the chore. I'd have a go check for sure to see exactly what it is.
The scratch call was made by a retired cabinet maker.
What would be fun and a little more challenging would be to use the little Mossy 410. I know I do have some 3" #4's for it. ;)

I just finished 3 days in the woods. Didn't hear or see any turkeys, that are usually here, until we got back to the house. 5 drakes by the feeder. I may try again in a couple of weeks. I brought my mossy 410 turkey gun. You'll see much better results with the tss than the #4.

While traveling back home from work today, I saw 14 birds working scratching in a bean field. It's amazing to me how more sophisticated decoys, ammo, and cammo patterns have become for hunting them. I'm not sure my shoulder would up to the task of shooting a 3-1/2 shell's payload of some of this new ammo.

Turkey season opens Saturday. Grandson finishing up last minute details. I think he’s ready for another season.

I haven't been turkey hunting with him in a long time. But he will still let me know bright and early in the morning if he gets one. He may get wet. We have rain moving in real early in morning.

Here we have a youth hunt only April 8th & 9th, then reg. season starts April 15th, and runs through May 28th.

There's a Hunt With A Henry video of Cody and his buddy taking his two sons on turkey hunt(s). Pretty special moments, impressed with the discipline of the kids.

Grandson didn't get one this weekend. First year he hasn't gotten one opening weekend in a long time.

I don't think we have a youth turkey hunt here in Michigan, but I picked up my spring turkey license the other day. There is so many turkey, I think we all hunt at the same time.

ImageI’ve hunted last two springs and will this one as well with a David Halloran laminated green slate paired up with his Jatoba striker. Very confident in this combination. Shooting a Henry single shot 20 gauge with TruLock.585 choke with Apex TSS #9’s.
My 2022 second bird.
