BBS with 24" Shilen barrel

Post by leverjc » Fri Mar 10, 2023 7:36 pm

Received my BBS back from Diamond T Rifles with a 24" Shilen barrel yesterday. I temporarily put and old Bushnell scope on it just to see how it shoots. The conditions at the range were cold about 36 degrees, overcast and breezy (I am sure Gene would think that is warm and balmy). I had loaded up some 140grn Missouri Bullet Stingers and some 158grn Berrys. I had trouble dialing in the scope because of lack of idiot arrows on the turrets, I kept turning them the wrong way. After getting the scope dialed in I shot 8 more rounds that left me smiling ear to ear, at 50yds I put 8 rounds into the 2' dot. The loads were 5.3grn and 5.5grn of CFE Pistol under the Berry bullets.

How did the new barrel compare to the original at 50 yds.? That is some great shooting!

Red, I believe it's a 357.
I have a Rossi with the 24" octagon, it shoots nicely.
Not sure that the extra inches adds anything other than a longer site radius.

I’m genuinely curious what it does to go that long. Do cartridge manufacturers use slower burning powders in pistol cartridges designed for lever actions? Thinking of Hammerdown, LeverEvolution etc. They would be really losing performance in handguns for those that hunt with them, but the fast burning pistol powders are known to not offer optimum performance in rifles. My 16.5” barreled BBS are likely the best blend.

I guess there are a few things I left out. There is a pic and an explanation in the centerfire lever section. The 24" barrel is nice for the sight radius for the iron sights that are required for Lever Silhouette. It is chambered in .357. Being a 22 mag will nock down pistol cal. steel critters most of the time all i need with a 357 is a accurate mouse fart load. I let ya all know more of what I think of it after I have a chance to do some offhand shooting with it.
