Wild boar in Canada

Post by GunnyGene » Fri Feb 24, 2023 11:57 am

Canada did this to itself. Thanks fellas, we really need a Northern front to meet up with the millions of the critters in the Southern US that are moving North. Idiots.

Read this the other day. Never thought we would have to worry about wild hogs up here in the north. Good think I just bought a 300 blackout as that seems to be a popular caliber for hog hunting.

Open season, no limit. I think something like that would diminish their numbers. No property owners gonna like those stinking things.

Buy or reload lots of ammo. You'll need it, if you are serious about helping control the population. Feral hogs in MS don't require a permit, there are no firearm restrictions (full auto is allowed if you have a NFA stamp), and it's open season, no limit, day or night 365 days a year. We kill 10's of thousands by various means every year, and we still can't keep up with the population growth. They breed faster than we can kill them. We ain't gonna BBQ our way out of this.

Wont be no open season on those in Colorado. It will just be another opportunity for the big boys to steal more money off the sportsman.

If that's how they want to play, then y'all are gonna have a serious problem in 10 or 20 years. Those cute little white picket/privacy fences (or common 5' chain link) in the 'burbs won't even slow them down. They eat anything, including your house pets and kids if they're handy.

Gene in Wyoming and Colorado there is already issues with Elk herds that are destroying crops and pastures because of the herd sizes. just this last year Colorado was seeking sharp shooters to do herd control around Great Sand Dunes National Monument. So when these herds get out of control farmers and ranchers turn to the big man for help. Guess where the help comes from. Why not open it up to people who want the meat. Not to mention there is so much private ground now that the common hunter cant access because I personally dont have 5 or 10K to go Elk hunting on private ground.

I understand. And it should be opened up without having cough up thousands of dollars. Don't know what else to tell you.

No answer expected. Ive just given up hunting as the cost is more than I care to deal with. Elk hunters in Colorado to even qualify for the drawing are forced to buy a small game license to. Its all a money grab

Here's the USDA distribution in the US covering from 1982 to 2021. Easy to see how they've spread.

No hogs here, we do have coyotes and it's an open season.
We are required to at least have a small game/fishing license though.
But no night hunting, which is Stupid.

The maps showed a population of them in Grant county (which is right door next to me) from 2016-2018 but it's gone from the 2019-2021 maps. Found this article in the Spokane paper that said "Through August, a team from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will attempt to locate and remove feral pigs, which have been spotted in that area over the past year." so maybe that got rid of them.

The maps show the population by counties in Oregon raising and lowering over the years so they must have some kind of eradication program there too.

USDA estimates and WAGs are just that. They try to spot as many as they can and/or take reports from State and Local sources, which themselves aren't terribly reliable. About the only thing you can get from these surveys is that the populations are growing over the long term. Year to year doesn't mean much, partly because pigs are very mobile. They can be in County 1 today, and 2 counties away by the next morning. Good swimmers to. Imo, the population sizes and distribution is significantly underestimated.

750,000 wild boar in South Carolina, the state kindly asks home owners to shoot piggies day or night no permit no bag limit no restrictions no questions asked, the same goes for coyote.

The Field and Stream article shows a bunch of spots in BC with feral pigs. I’m VERY active on our hunting forums here, and while it’s discussed regularly, there has not been a single confirmed sighting or shooting of a feral pig in BC.

On the map below (taken from the F&S article), Hatch, John and a couple of other members are near the black arrowhead, and I’m at the yellow one. Come Monday, Henry hopefully is shipping a scope mount for my .44 BBSC. Between the few of us, we’ll get them critters! 🤣

Frankly, I feel like more people have seen Sasquatch in our area than a bonafide feral pig. There’s been a couple of “loose” domestic pigs shot, but they have come from known hog farms with recent escapees.

Good luck, and be careful; they can be dangerous - even after they're dead (often carry a lot of diseases). Here's what we know about them in MS:

I’ll be careful Gene, which will be easy enough, because as I said, there aren’t any here. Maybe some day, but not just yet.

That’s good to hear Red. Also that’s an instant classic, “more people have seen Sasquatch than a feral pig”. Good one!

Hopefully we’ll never have to coordinate an eradication hunt.

Here's a couple reports from Canadian sources and a recent article from the Smithsonian.

The CA reports are a few years old.
