NO CB or SHOTSHELLS?
NO CB or SHOTSHELLS?
Just bought another Henry rifle - this time a H001L (.22 Classic Carbine)
When reading the manual on page 10 (ammunition), the manual says do not use CB or Shotshells in any Henry lever action .22
I have never used any of this ammunition in my .22 rifles but I know people who like to use the sub-sonic ammo around their house or in town. Anyone know why Henry warns owners not to use the above mentioned ammo in their rifles?

The shot from the shotshells may distort the rifling. I don't know what CB means.

Re: NO CB or SHOTSHELLS?
.22 shot shells belong in the Henry garden gun shotgun. Videos on youtube show that they don't do much out of the rifled barrels. The garden gun does a nice job if the range isn't too far.
I know that low powered ammo might not make it out of the barrel, like Aquila primer only .22 shells. They get quieter and slower the longer the barrel.

I think, but not positive, that CB ammo is sub-sonic .22 ammo with lighter grain bullets for things like pest control or target shooting.

22 CB Cap, 22 Short, 22 LR
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_CB wrote:
The original .22 CB cap has the same tiny case as the .22 BB cap and the two cartridges are interchangeable. There are now .22 rounds sold as .22 CB Short and .22 CB Long which come in the standard .22 Rimfire cartridge case sizes to allow the rounds to be used in standard magazine-fed firearms which would likely jam with the tiny BB or CB cases. The CCI .22 CB Short and .22 CB Long use the same 29-grain bullet as the regular .22 Short and .22 Long. The CCI CB rounds have muzzle velocities of 720 feet per second (ft/s) for an impact energy of 33 foot/pounds (ft-lb). The standard .22 Short and .22 Long fire the same bullet weight at 1,045 ft/s for 70 ft-lb. The CB rounds are relatively quiet for short range target practice, control of small pests, or use in older .22 guns that might not be safe with modern high pressure rounds. For trapping these CB Short and CB Long rounds in indoor target practice, a standard .22 bullet trap is needed. Other modern CB type rounds, such as the .22 Aguila Colibri and .22 Aguila Super Colibri, have bullets in the same weight range as the original CB cap with velocities in the 300 ft/s to 500 ft/s range using the Long case
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_CB wrote:The .22 CB cap has a very small propellant charge (usually no gunpowder, just the primer), resulting in a low muzzle velocities of between 350 and 853 feet per second (107 and 260 m/s).[3] Due to their low power, classic CB rounds used in indoor target practice can be trapped by many pellet gun traps since some modern pellet guns exceed the velocity of the CB round (however, this depends on the limits designed in the individual pellet trap). In longer rifle barrels the CB has a very quiet, seemingly non-existent report due to the lack of residual pressure at the muzzle (see Internal ballistics). The CB loses velocity fast in longer barrels, due to the lack of anything other than the primer as a propellant.

Ok, probably way to short to cycle.

I assume there is a chance for a cb round to get stuck in a rifle barrel?

Re: NO CB or SHOTSHELLS?
Yes, that's called a squib load and very dangerous should you not detect one and keep shooting. People have been killed by squib loads. It's basically putting an obstruction in the barrel and a following shot with that bullet still in the barrel can raise pressures to the dangerous level, even in a 22.
As for cycling, if Henry rates a 22 rifle for being able to cycle 22 Shorts, 22 Longs and 22 LRs, I can't see any issues cycling the CB versions of those loads. A CB is basically same case and bullet, just no powder. I'm not Henry, of course, but I suspect Henry doesn't want the liability with squib loads. Just guessing, here, so might be worth a call to Henry.
As for me, having shot CBs in a variety of different rifles, I highly recommend using a rifle action when shooting CBs that makes it easy to peer down the bore when you suspect something, such as a bolt gun with an easy to remove bolt or a break barrel single shot or even one of my classic falling block single shots. A lever gun is a different story. Not easy to inspect the bore unless you have a bore light, handy.
Re: NO CB or SHOTSHELLS?
I have never shot any quiet or sub-sonic .22 ammo in a rifle. A friend gave me a partial box of Remington .22 Subsonic long rifle ammo and wanted to see what I thought of them. He did some trapping and bought a box for dispatching trapped animals. I fired a few of them out of my Ruger single six. The stated velocity on the box was 1049 fps but sure it was less than that out of the handgun. Pretty sure I will not be purchasing any of the low noise, CB, or subsonic ammo for my use.
After reading the comments & experiences you all have had, I can understand why Henry warned against using this type ammo in their rifles.
Thanks!

Never had any issues shooting CCI Quiets or 22 CB.s out of my Henry lever or pump action. You are missing the most FUN of a rimfire when want some easy quiet plinking in your woods or range. Plinking along on a Sunday afternoon! https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxBKwRV065Md ... T4VGuH88tN
Re: NO CB or SHOTSHELLS?
I have these CB Caps left over from when I lived in the suburbs. A couple of times I need to eliminate a Flicker who was pecking up my home siding. I shot these in a Ruger 77/22 bolt action rifle and never had a squib but until reading NCG’s earlier post stating the CB cap is primer only no powder I was surprised. I looked up the velocity on the CB Caps and they are 710 fps, same as the CCI Quiets that are popular these days. Maybe I shoot these up in my Ruger Wrangler.

Re: NO CB or SHOTSHELLS?
Yes, CBs and CCI Quiet are subsonic loads around 700 fps, but that's just a small sample of subsonic loads. All it takes to be subsonic is a velocity under 1100 fps, so that covers a huge range of loads, all the way from CBs at the low end up to and including most very expensive match ammo just under 1100 fps. If you want superb accuracy and fairly low report, current subsonic HP loads designed for hunting/target work are amazing. I run Eley subsonic HPs (1040fps) out of my best target rifles for 50 yard work and accuracy is right there with my best target ammo, but at a nicer price.

Re: NO CB or SHOTSHELLS?
A few weeks ago I suspected I had a squib in my Henry and folded a white piece of paper in the chamber and aimed the paper to the cloudy sky. I could see the piece of paper looking down the barrel. Matter of fact I’ve done this quite often to see how dirty the barrel is.North Country Gal wrote: ↑Sat Feb 11, 2023 8:13 pmYes, that's called a squib load and very dangerous should you not detect one and keep shooting. Re: NO CB or SHOTSHELLS?
HOW is super soft lead gonna distort the hard steel rifling? I've shot "rat shot" through almost all of my .22's........It doesn't hurt a thing. Other than maybe getting a little barrel leading......Sometimes.
Re: NO CB or SHOTSHELLS?
Going back a lot of years, probably early 1990s, I think it was either Remington or CCI, that had a .22 cartridge that everyone called "CB Longs. Their ad in magazines (pre internet) was a picture of the cartridge next to a popped kernel of popcorn, I remember that clearly. They claimed the ammo to be quieter. I bought some of that ammo and tried it through my Smith M41, and it shot to the same point of impact at 25 yards, but didn't cycle the pistol, grouped like target ammo too. Tried it in a .22 rifle, and it grouped about the same as any other .22 ammo I used back then, but it was really, really quiet.
We had a couple of bird feeders in our yard and my ex always claimed that there were rats in the grass under the feeders, which I dismissed. We were in the middle of suburbia, so hardly likely that there were rats. Then one day, she said one was out there, and sure enough, a rat. I had a few .22 rifles, but they were all set up for 50 yards with higher magnification scopes. I grabbed the single shot Savage that I got for Christmas at 12 years old, with it's Weaver D4, and those CB rounds. From the back window on our 2nd floor bedroom, it was about a 12 yard shot, almost straight down. Of course her and the kids were watching from downstairs. I had no idea where to hold since I didn't know where the bullet would be in relation to the crosshairs at that distance, but the rat turned to point away from me, so I held on his back right between his front lets, and let one go. Perfect head shot, which I still claim was my intention on that shot. When I went out to get rid of the dead rat, I noticed some neighbors in their yard a couple houses away, and they were completely unaware. A shooter would have known what that sound was, but those CBs are so quiet that it seriously goes unnoticed by everyone else.

Re: NO CB or SHOTSHELLS?
CB stands for conical bullet. Conical bullets were a longer, heavier bullet that was once loaded in old low power rimfire rounds, but those haven't been made for many years. The CB label survives, though, and now just means a rimfire round of similar velocity, meaning roughly 700 fps.
If your Henry rifle is designed to handle regular 22 Shorts, it will cycle CB Shorts, but with squib loads always a possibility when you get down to this low a velocity, it's common for manufacturers to warn against CBs for liability reasons.
And squibs are always a possibility with CBs - have had a few - so I strongly advise NOT to wear hearing protection. You need to listen for a shot that didn't sound right and then check the bore of your rifle.
By the way, CCI Quiets have the same velocity, but Quiets use a standard LR case and 40 grain bullets. The good news is that you get no residue ring in the chamber of a fine 22 LR rifle when using Quiets. Be warned, though, the heavier 40 grain bullet used in Quiets is notorious for ricochets. Not something you want if you are have neighbors.
