Newest rifle build

The 308 is working! Decided I wanted a serious rifle. Have researched the 308 AR for several years. Put it all together this summer. Second rifle build went smoothly. First shots went where I pointed them. Yes, it's loud and packs a punch. But, wow.

I will keep to factory ammo for a while. But, saving brass.

I hope I never Need it. However, I'm glad to have it ready.

I have an AR10 I need to shoot. It's an Armalite, with a Vortex Viper Scope and the 45 degree iron sights in case a boar charges.

Several years ago I had a Rock River AR-10 that I played around with shooting mid-range F Class matches. We shot from 300 and 600 yards. While it (and me) couldn’t compete with the precision bolt guns on the line it did hold it’s own and at 600 when I did my part it could stay within 1.5 Moa. Of course I always sent enough “fliers” down range to affect my score.

You will enjoy that AR 10, nice to pack a punch with a good supply of ammo. Fun!

Funny, I decided to look for a picture of my AR and found this one from 2016. Notice the desktop computer and the landline phone. LOL!

My new 308. Only one glitch. Lock back on empty is failing. Other than that, I’m very happy.

My first guess is it’s the magazine if it locks back manually.

It doesn't. Really struggling with this. Over springed? Bad mechanism on the lock back? Not enough bolt movement? I hate mysteries when dealing with guns.

Work the bolt manually in slow motion and I'd check the internal relationship of the magazine lip and the bolt catch. If that is working, lifting the bolt catch properly, check the reach of the bolt catch tab to the bolt. If that is adequate then it may be the spring is too heavy and you aren't getting enough bolt travel. If either of the first two are inadequate, easy fix. Replace the bolt catch/release. Last one, replace the spring.

OR, make sure all moving components are moving free, and not dragging, and properly lubed. (Could be a bind somewhere in the cycle.)

Well, I think I got it. Replaced carbine buffer with rifle length. Threw in a new hold back latch to be sure. It now holds back properly, with empty mag, and manually. It also is picking up new round consistently. Weather has kept me from firing. Looking forward to some range time.

I'll let you know how it does. I really like this rifle. Boom!

Went to son's last Sunday. Rifle performed flawlessly. Dang! That big boom is impressive. Next up is some gas block tuning. Cases are coming out with some flattening at the mouth. I believe it is related to an overgassing. I've studied the procedure for adjusting the pressure. Will screw down the aperture until it improves.

Hoping to shoot Sunday again. Have all the parts to assemble a target frame that will allow paper and steel targets. Getting closer to some serious shooting.

Glad you solved your problem and it's working the way you want. I have a 308 in case the feral pigs work their way around to our location. They are a problem here in OK, but not in our area at the moment. 308 ammo is hard to come by and price has doubled, tripled in most shops when you can find it. I bought mine JUST for piggys.

I bought about 80 rounds to get started. Avg $1.50/rnd. Then I camped on Starlines front step til they came through with brass. My LGS finally located some primers. I'll be good for a while.
