Saw a couple nice Henry .45-70s today.

I was at a gun shop today that carries a LOT of guns. I saw several Henrys, but the two that really caught my eye were both 18" one with leaf sights & one with the peep Henry puts on some models. I really liked the one with the leaf sights better. The reason is I like the all steel front sight that was dovetailed on the bbl on this one. The one with the peep sights had the nylon front that is integral with the front bbl band. The dovetail would make changing sights a snap if you wanted to plus it's drilled & tapped for either scope or peep rear sights.
What really got my attention was that I was able to look at several Marlins too. Folks the fit & finish on the Henrys was WAY better than on the Marlins. The Henrys were a bit cheaper in price too. Seeing both side by side left me no qualms about going with the Henry should I want a .45-70 lever rifle. I think there was that much difference between the two favoring the Henry. That I got to look at several samples of each was great too. The difference in exterior quality was quite evident to me. They had the levers tied down so I couldn't work the actions, but metal finish on the Henry was noticably superior on all samples I looked at. I am kind of a Marlin fan too!

I bought a Remlin stainless 357 a few yrs back. It was so bad it wouldnt even cycle the 357 rounds it was chambered for in the first place. It would cycle 38 special but not 357. I should have sent it back to remington but there customer service was terrible at that time. I sent the gun to Mic McPherson in southern colorado. He is a well know levergun man. He said the gun should have never left the factory. After it came back it cycles as good as any lever I have. But I would never buy another Marlin ever. Email Remingtons President and see if you get an answer. I read on other forums some guys sayin Henrys tube feed keeps them from owning them. I have both and wouldnt let that keep me from owning a levergun. Al

My buddy recently bought a Marlin in 44 mag. I got a chance to shoot it. It's not a bad rifle. My Henry is much superior in fit finish and smooth operation IMO.

That's what I saw at the shop I was in. The Henry's were better in fit & finish, smoother looking & the wood was prettier.
If I needed/wanted a levergun today it'd be a Henry!

The one you saw with the peep sights and plastic rings is the old model. They had lots of problems with the tube twisting and coming apart so they re-engineered it. Haven't heard any complaints about the newer version (I have one). This was only happening with the 45-70-s due to the recoil.

Looked at another in Bozeman yesterday. Very well made with nice wood very well fitted. It was one of the newer ones imeccentric, it had the dovetail front sight & dovetail leaf rear. Very nice rifle & was really well balanced to me, the weight was just right between my hands. The Price was $699. A beautiful rifle. I'd sure like to have one I'd have to sell something.
