Ammo for CZ 452

Post by ditto1958 » Mon Oct 17, 2016 1:47 pm

I have tried quite a few varieties of ammo in my new CZ 452. I was hoping it would "like" the cheap stuff. Alas, so far it appears to shoot noticeably more accurate with Eley ammo than with anything else if tried. I guess the good news, though, is that it does shoot well. My pocket book is gonna hurt, though.

How does Norma and RWS compare to the Eley?

I haven't tried them yet. I have some RWS and something else I found (Rifle Match, maybe?) that I will be trying on Wednesday.

If I find the person who got me caught up in this addictive quest, I'm gonna choke him.

The Rifle Match is good stuff. Heck all the Norma and RWS is good.

For some reason my new 452 likes Remington Thunderduds. I find that not only interesting, but also fortunate, as it's inexpensive 22LR.

Thunderduds, as you might surmise from the nickname (not to be confused with its kissing cousin, Remington Golden Boogers) has been the recipient of a good deal of negative criticism over the years. Yet, looking at some of the rounds next to some pricier target ammo, it actually looks surprisingly similar. The bullets have a greasy lubricant on them, as do many varieties of match ammo. Also, brass is roll crimped onto the bullets.

This is complete conjecture on my part, but I have a idea. Perhaps the issues people complain of with this ammo involve blasting away hundreds of rounds of the stuff using semi-auto guns. This ammo was designed a long time ago for use in single shot rifles, lever guns, bolt action guns with small magazines, revolvers, etc., and continues to work really well in those guns to this day. Maybe it's just not optimal in semi-auto rifles and pistols. Anyway, I need to buy some of the stuff.

My CZ's seem quite happy with a few different types of ammunition. I've never fed it anything expensive like Eley, but SK Std Plus, RWS Geco and CCI Std all seem to work well. I did try Remington Golden Bullets once, but they gave shotgun pattern results. CCI Minimag weren't much better. I normally stick to the SK Standard Plus now.

I'm going to try some of the duds as I have several cases of it laying around. And you are right that I was only shooting them in a 10/22.

Would expect to see a few flyers with the thunder turds. I don't have a CZ, but my Marlin N25 likes the Winchester M22. Figure that ?
As you would expect, there is the occasional flyer due to the inherent inconsistencies in that grade of ammo.
