Sears JC Higgins 101.750 shotgun

I ran across one of these .410 bolt action shotguns today for $225 with two boxes of shells and a magazine. I was tempted to buy it. I’ve always had good luck with Higgins products. I think this particular shotgun was made by Stevens and was their model 58. It could also be a Springfield.

Any on me know about these?

I have a lot of .410 so that is why I’m so interested. It’s a wide variety and 1,950 shells total. I had a Winchester 9410 that I gave to my friend in Alaska along with 2,000 shells.

It could've been made by Marlin.
I have a Sears model 45 JC Higgins which is really a Marlin 336 by all regards.

I had a Marlin made Higgins one time. In this case Marlin didn’t make this model.

I saw a Rough Rider SA birdshead in the same store. I was tempted to buy it also but passed. I’m holding out for an Uberti.

I know! It’s in excellent shape. Some wear around the muzzle and trigger guard with the rest look new. I prefer to shoot left handed and this is a bolt action that I can shoot south. Some bolt actions bind when worked with the left hand over the top.

Thanks. I said Steven’s but meant Savage. The owner said it was a Springfield. I didn’t know enough about it at the time so I went home to do some research. What I’ve found is original magazines run $100 to $150 if you can find them. This one comes with what I believe is an original. He kept magazines in the back to keep them walking away. Aftermarket mags run around $40.

Yeah, pretty sure that's a Savage. The weak point on these old bolt action shotguns is the magazine. If you lose one, could be an issue finding another one.

Personally, I'd rate that price as being a touch high for a bolt shotgun, unless, of course, you really want a bolt shotgun. If you shop around you could probably find an old Savage/Stevens pump 410 for the same or less. Not a big deal, though.

I doubt you'll find a Savage or Stevens pump for less than that.
Now you might find a newer off brand for that.
A quick search on GB showed a Hatfield pump for around that price but I know nothing of those.

I went and looked at my .410 bolt action. I didn't have one and my favorite dealer in Saranac Lake had one. It's a Western Field model 150D. It says it takes 2 1/2 and three inch shells and has a full choke. I should take it out this season for rabbits. I don't think I have every put anything through it yet. I got it because I really like .410 and didn't have a bolt action. This one even has the Mossberg rubber butt pad so there isn't much mystery who made it for Montgomery Ward.

I think half its value is in the magazine. I want to go back and this time look at the magazine. If it’s original I’m going to buy it.

I’m hoping it will cycle 2 1/2” shells. Sometimes if they take 3” they don’t like the shorter ones even if they say they cycle both. All my ammo is the shorter 2 1/2”.

Paper and plastic jugs. It’s going to be kind of a reserve firearm. Something I could harvest a rabbit with if the need arose. I had the Winchester 9410 but it’s now in Alaska. He did get a few grouse with it this fall.

I called about the shotgun and spoke with one of the clerks. He was not familiar with the firearm and said his specialty was bows. He confirmed it would take both 2 1/2 and 3” shells. To him the magazine looked like it had the same finish as the rifle and he would guess it was original. While not being familiar with this particular firearm he said he could generally tell OME from aftermarket. As far as being Savage or Springfield he had no clue but said Craig the owner would know and would be in tomorrow.

With four inches of snow expected I might call instead of driving up to see it again.
