we just learned that Bea's funeral is scheduled for 2PM Friday .... it will be in a town 25 or so miles west of Asheville which is right at 300 miles west of us .... we plan to drive up that morning, spend the night at a cousin's home in Asheville and return home Saturday .... on the one hand, we dread it because of the reason for the trip .... on the other hand, we are looking forward to going because we will get to visit with several cousins we haven't seen in all too many years

Condolences for your loss. I have only one aunt left on the maternal side of the family. She lives in W. Virginia, and I haven't seen her since I was a kid. I spoke by phone with her when my mom passed last year. She didn't make the trip to Oklahoma for the service as she was having health problems herself.

I understand the conflict of feelings. As sad as the passing of a relative is getting together with family is always a pleasure. Many years ago when my grandmother on my mom’s side passed I remember my mom saying that grandma would really enjoy all the grandkids getting together. Lots of cousins on this side of the family and we did exactly that. Reserved a banquet room at a local restaurant and have a wonderful time. Most of us were still local but some cousins had moved elsewhere and it’s always fun when we can get together as we were all raised in Spokane.

Funny side story, my mom was a big sports fan for the Seattle Seahawks and Mariners and the Gonzaga Bulldog college basketball teams. So we decided for her funeral we would all wear polo style shirts with team logo’s on them. We know she had a big smile on her face.

The last of the prior generation for my family is gone with the passing of an uncle two years ago. Now it’s my generation that is the old folks.

that's the same for us and unfortunately, all too many of our generation have already passed on as well

Sorry about your relative passing. We were in Ashville and Cherokee over the weekend. Trees were turning very nicely. A reminder to me how fleeting time is.
