Sad story. Shows how we are responsible for ourselves and if that gets out of line things canl get out of hand quickly.

What concerns me is that last shot,
the perp is clearing no longer a threat.

I thought about that as well. Or why not a warning shot? But when something like that goes down that fast all bets are off.
I'm sure there are individuals that wouldn't have fired (could have lead to him/his families demise) and others that would have unloaded the magazine.
He's in the middle and to be honest I don't know what I would have done in that situation. Calling the cops immediately would have been a good move.
Weird thing nobody went near him or even attempted CPR or even took his pulse when he was laying there.

Seems to me like the kid should have listened when the dad yelled that he had a gun. Was the third shot needed? Hard to say. The kid was turning to go after the first, but if he was on meth or something else like it, you’d not want him to turn back at you if it wasn’t an incapacitating shot. A cop friend once told me “if you ever have to use a gun to defend yourself, make sure yours is the only story that gets told”…

I see what you are saying, she should have called as soon as she saw him outside, but if he wasn't on the property, unfortunately these days, the PD still may not have arrived in time to make a difference as they might have assigned the call a low priority.
"What's he doing out on the public street ma'am?"

She was on the phone with 911 once he came onto the property but before he started breaking the door down.
As for warning shots, in LAW Enforcement, WARNING shots are strictly prohibited and in the years I taught CCW I strongly advised against them as YOU are responsible for every round you fire. If you fire a shot not aimed at center of mass, WHERE does it go? It has your name, and the name of your attorney and Liability Insurance on the bullet.

You often hear the uninformed say, Shoot them in the leg... ever hear of the Femoral Artery?

Shot is shot, you shoot for center mass to stop the threat with the least number of shots, reduce the risk to the innocent.
I think dad did a good job holding fire until the kid pulled the secured locked door open.
You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

I read somewhere that 911 told them not to approach the fallen man because he might have a gun. I too was a little surprised by the extra shots as he turned away, BUT in my CCW class the teacher showed a body cam video of a guy who refused to stop to repeated verbal commands and was walking calmly away. At one point he raised a pistol and fired back at the cop once over his shoulder without even turning his head. Then he went down as the cop returned fire. Into his BACK.

I don’t think anybody should assume that a bad guy who is retreating is no longer a threat. He could easily have turned and fired. Once you open fire, keep it up until he is down and no longer a threat. IMHO the shooter in the video did exactly the right thing.

I hope I never have to use my pistol. I do mentally play different scenarios in my head at public places, “What do I do if somebody enters this restaurant and starts shooting? Drop to the floor with my family to shield them? Run toward him and shoot?” My first goal should be to make sure MY family is secure, at that point I can hopefully decide what next and not just be freaked out. Tough tough decisions in a time of very high stress!

I think it would help you to decide if the perp is obviously high on drugs, because then you know he is completely 110% fearless and irrational.

FYI a good free book for Prime members discusses the use of drugs in pre WW2 Germany and during the war.

It's funny, when I was a Field Training Officer for Patrol Operations in my department, my recruit and I had just started a Midnight patrol shift and stopped at a Wendy's not far from HQ to eat before heading into our assigned area. We got our food and I told him to choose the best position. After I corrected him, I quizzed him throughout the meal, with what if scenarios. One was, what if an armed robbery took place right now. We couldn't be seen from the counter. He started to describe his movements, and I told him with the restaurant as crowded as it was, we would let the robbery take place as long as everything remained calm, nothing happened inside. We would observe and get good descriptions, of the subjects and vehicles, follow when they left. To take action inside put everyone at risk.

We left. Ten minutes later, as we entered our patrol area, "Armed Robbery just occurred, Wendy's, 33 and Glenside, two subjects armed with shotguns." They had seen us inside and waited until we left.

You can bet that recruit listened when I spoke for the rest of his training. He was a very smart officer, listened and learned, I recommended him for a firearms instructor slot, and he later became the training coordinator. We taught firearms and Officer Safety /Street Survival in the Academy together. He often told that anecdote.

My first favorite Target is center chest, the second favorite spot is center chest, and the third favorite spot is center face. With the availability of vests, if a fourth shot is required the femoral artery is a choice, (if you are armed with a shotgun) IMO . . .

We often taught the pelvic cradle rather than the head. The head moves a lot even if the body is static, however, the pelvic cradle is fairly static with the core, and even if the subject is wearing armor, it is usually an unprotected target. Break the cradle, the target goes down.
